cool find to come across ....

why all the crazy talk bout being in front of those snakes guys ....they can't jump 12 feet to bite you, at most they can reach out 2/3's of there body length when they strike....not sure bout other places/states but here in PA you need a permit to harvast rattlers and only one male per year during a 6 week mid summer season....gotta respect nature and it will respect you back, those snakes just want to be left alone as you would want them to leave you alone ....onlt people get bite when they come across snakes are the ones who harass them and deserved it as well .......bob

You cock blocked that snake, I can't believe it didn't fly through the air and latch onto your throat. That's the normal reaction isn't it??

They are Southern Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus helleri), not Western diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox). They dont make it
out this far west in California.

I've been riding socal and norcal trails for over 15 years, and rattlers are a common find when it warms up. They love to bask in the sun by laying across the trail. I know of two people who have been bitten on the trail. First was my buddy who was struck while bunnyhopping one on the trail. Sometimes you just don't have time to stop and have to hop them. This time he got bit and we had to treat him on the trail, and carry him to the car and rush to hospital.
The second was my dumbass friend Joe "The Anything Hunter" who felt like playing snake charmer. He was about 6 ft from it and teasing it with a stick. We were talking and he started demonstrating something stupid with the stick. Then faster then he could react, the rattler gave him a hard, deep bite and took off into brush. It was totally surreal because it happened so fast! He almost lost his lower leg because of blood flow and infection. He spent a couple weeks in the hospital with his leg elevated in a sling.

You can play with snakes, but just don't be suprised when you do get bit.

Same with fire, right?
