Default Project: House (Coffee Table, TV Mount, Picture Frames, etc)

I am positive many of you have seen Top Gear (both US and UK). You've probably noticed the kick ass coffee table they have on both.

Well I just bough a new house and am working on my living room. I'm going with a mechanical/industrial look. I have wanted to do a coffee table like that forever, especially since I hate the one I have now (retarded expensive one I inherited in the divorce). So on to the planning....

I didn't want a 250lb coffee table so I was only interested in an aluminum block. Also a V8 was a must. The problem with this idea is that aluminum book V8's are typically in sports cars, this means expensive!

So I spent the better part of a day scouring CL. LS1,2 or 3 blocks are usually in the $300-500 range and I was looking to stay below $300 for this project.

So a off-roaring friend of mine brought up the Lexus V8 that some guys were using in thier buggies. A quick search later and I found a terribly worded ad for a LS400 COMPLETE for $150. DEAL. I had a few friends come help me pick it up.

Over the next two nights I stripped the motor down to it's bare block. Not an easy task with this motor. The drive gear for the accessory drive was seized on and we ended up using a cutting torch to remove it. To make a long story not so long here are the pictures.

End of the first night:

End of the second might after spending a couple hours removing gasket material with the air tools.

This motor is 20 years old now, came out of a 1992 LS400 so as you can see and imagine it's not all that clean.

A few calls later and a friend of a friend hooks me up. He works at Inland Truck Parts (big rig shop) and let me bring the block by to have it cleaned in one of thier huge machines washers.

Came out much better than before but not quite good enough....

So with the remainder of my lunch hour I swung by Liquid Coatings in east KC. Walked in and talked with the guy, after a few minutes I got him to hook me up with some glass bead blasting and he said I could pick it up that afternoon, awesome. He did me a cash deal and we were on our way.

Now it looked great.

Bonus picture of the dually across the street.

On to the next part, the legs. I wanted some aluminum pucks to raise the block off the floor. Made a call to Bad Attitude Machining and told him what I wanted.

He spun these off the lathe for me yesterday. 1.75"x3.00" pucks drilled and counter-bored for M8 hardware.

Thanks again Paul

So that is where I sit currently, about a week into the project so far. I hope to have it completely mocked up this evening. The rods and pistons that will be holding the glass may need more attention and a trip to the bead blaster as well.

More pictures tonight hopefully.

About 50lbs I'd estimate. It's a 4.0L if you were wondering.

I think you should get a bit more creative Harley, Since when do you only go the "needed" distance in a build????

Get another one, (cut the bell housing off one and the front section if needed on the other) and have them tigged together to make a V16!!! Now that's a table you can brag about.
Perhaps even a V6 IF it's the same size configuration.

Nope, going with the american V8 type deal. I know it's a Toyota motor, but nothing says American like outsourcing!

Here's another piece I have for the room. This was built by my current girlfriend's dad for me as a house warming gift.

You turn it on and off by clicking the handle.

It's a Corvair hubcap, gas pump handle (obviously) and a headlight bezel.

And the last piece I did was out of thriftiness. A 12' curtain rod was over $100 for anything I liked. So to hell with that.

Some plumbing conduit, iron threaded adapter and end caps, and some lag hooks. Add some curtains and bam, my "industrial" curtain rod.

I tell you, being a crawler with the "I'll make my own" attitude can yield some cool stuff for cheap

Thanks Donny, the floor was just refinished before I bought it. It's the original hardwood from when the house was built in '57.
