| flexible driveshaft maybe ?
im sure you know what a flexible screwdriver looks like, what if you used something like this instead of a slider ? i think it would withstand alot of torque.

I don't see how you get the ability to extend and collapse though, all it would do is bend and bind the u joints up.

If you could adapt one to work, the coil would uncoil when a wheel got bound up...

i dont think it would work in reverse. Wouldnt it just unwrap?
