Default my dads little retirement project

my dad just sent me some up to date photos of his "little" retirement project.
36' on deck gaff rigged cutter with a 16' bowsprit.
it is a recreation of a boat that was in my family around the turn of the century and was scrapped in 1924, my grandfather was the last person alive that remembered the boat (he was 6 when it was scrapped but he somehow remembered a vast amount about it) but he passed away two years ago, before it was finish, which in turn made my father lose some interest in it for a while but has within the last 6 months gotten his wind back for it.
If you can get channel 9 out of Manchester NH, keep your eyes open for it on N.H. Chronicals, it been on there twice and we've been told they'll be doing yearly update on it till it's finished then they'll do a half hour special on it.
b.t.w. the "iron sail" is a 50 horse Kubota marine.

Making planks of wood form such a beautiful shape is truly an art. Do you have to soak the wood for long periods to get those nice bows?

he's got an elaborate steam bending setup. the wood is kept under steam throughout the entire bending process, allowing all the time he needs for shaping.

it's being built for bluewater cruising.
I'll have him send me a picture of the "test model" 1/12 scale model that won a 1st place at a model ship building contest that was in Boston a few years back, it was the only one that actually could sail.

Ever take it off any sweet jumps?

But really, wow - that is some nice work. Any idea how many hours he's got into it?

don't know about hours but the model has close to 2000 hrs in it, he started the 1:1 about four and a half years ago and before he retired he was putting about 8 hrs a day, then after he retired he's been putting about 10 to 12 hrs a day into it.
