I'm going to assume it helps with weight distribution throughout the chassis.

Its for looks, and its been done so many times now, some people seem to think its required when building a tube chassis. I personally dont like it, unless it fits into the scheme of the buggy, which it usually doesnt.

The front upper cage bar should bend out and follow the windshield contour and or up to the roof to follow that contour to give more crush space for the driver.

here is a pic a friends, now totaled car

that may help or may not so, yep!

It can be used to add streangth, because it creates just a little more triangulation and can be used as a point to add even more.

And it looks cool

if any thing it would weaken it. you want that bar as straight as possible. when your rolling down a hill. and your passenger side hits first on the side of the roll bar, it is going to want to bend or move to the drive side. if the bar is bent it is going follow the bend and push in the direction of the bend. if the bar is straight, the energy apon impact has no where to go but down the bar and to the drive side of the roll cage.

and its not really triangulated since there is no bottum to the top of the roll bar

Exactly, that's the reason why all of the 1:1 builders bend them.

And how do the forces react when that bar is hit dead in the middle?

That is kind of the point. The bar would have to bend further to hit the driver if it was bent out then it would have if it was just straight across. Tubes that follow the body also add more rigidity to the chassis than a cage that is just generically placed in the car.

Yep, that was kinda my point. Bent-out front bar serves three concerns IMO. 1) point of impact is farther from the driver/passenger; 2) creates a "slide" point so that frontal forces can be shifted; and 3) a straight bar is weak at all points except where it is reinforced, whereas a bent bar, or triangled bar spreads impact loads to each side much batter than a straight bar.
