Default Flickr is going to remove photos, further ruin forums on 2/5/19

The company that bought Flickr is pulling a Photobucket and screwing free users. On 2/5, any free user with more than 1,000 photos in their account will have photos deleted (starting with the oldest) to bring them down to 1,000 or you can pay $50 for a "Pro" account.

Start moving your albums someplace else if you are a Flickr user.

Son of a bitch! Now if every Flickr member would email them and let them have it this might not happen.

Honestly I don't think this is as big a deal as the Photobucket debacle. At least they're giving us 3 months beforehand, and also not outright nuking everyone and everything with no forewarning like Photobucket. $50 a year is also not an extortion worthy price unlike PB which was something like $300 at the time. I read the post from Flickr and it does clarify some things a bit even though I'm a bit salty that their reasoning for the 1,000 limit is that "Counting megabytes and gigabytes is harder than just a photo number limit". Link: http://blog.flickr.net/en/2018/11/01...s-1000-photos/

The only person I can think of that's affected here is bilinvc since he has more than 1k (just checked), otherwise I don't know how many other people had that much.

nothing stays free, get popular enough someone will buy it and make it paid service, or the load gets high enough to the server costs outrun the ad revenue and they have to make it paid.

If Imgur wasn't backed by Reddit I'm sure they would not be free anymore either.

EDIT: what kills me is that a lot of the articles are "backup now" WTF... why was PB or Flicker the ONLY copy of these images. Back up your shit... dam.

I have 5,219 photos on Flickr. Now I have to migrate them somewhere. And with how much of a PITA it is to use Flickr I can only imagine how tedious it is going to be to download all of my photos.

Do you plan to do that every time a different site goes paid?

I'm not sure what you mean. I've only used two photo hosting sources. One was ImageShack. They lost all kinds of data (photos), but thankfully I only had a few photos up there. That caused me to join Flickr and I've been there since.

I refuse to pay for a photo hosting service when there are many free ones including Google, iCloud, etc.

I'm operating under the assumption that any of those "free" companies could pull the same thing down the road. I'm also just wondering what your plan for your move is, you plan to re-download and move 5000 pictures, categorize them again in folders perhaps, and fix all your links in the forums for them as well?

I plan to download all of my photos just in case they aren't backed up elsewhere. I do not plan on deleting any as Flickr says they will take care of that.

If/when I re-upload them I may or may not worry about fixing forum links. This forum is the only one I consistently frequent.

But you are right, all of the other photo hosts will probably follow at some point.

I just pay the 20 a year and upload my pics from my computer, all my pics are stored on my computer, backed up every couple of weeks to my portable hard drive and also redundant backup on a USB thumb drive.

I dont have to worry about an online photo host screwing with my pics or holding them hostage for money

Took a few months off from posting pics after Photobucket screwed us, and moved to flickr. Now up to just under 1400 pics, of which many threads are based on....*sigh* Now they are going to apparently go dark too. Using very little space, most of my pics are resized to about 60kb or so.

I only use it for forum pics.... guess many of my threads are going to go pictureless again.

I'm a paying member here and therefore get some pic storage, but it's VERY limited picture storage/hosting iirc 200 images?

Me too, PB screwed a LOT of forums when they did that and I had been paying them, but instead of like $30 per year those asshats wanted like $700, screw that. I spent days moving pictures from PB to Flickr and reposting them all here!!!!!!

What now?

You need a site with just a little sting of porn, okay maybe a bigger sting.
Anyway that should keep things going for a while, and still never trust the cloud always have your pics in a couple of places at home.

We could also throw money at this site so we could host our own stuff.
