Default 1:1 Ford F-250 question...

Hey all you guys who "4-wheel for real", I've got a quick question.

I have a late 80's F-250 2wd (don't remember the exact year - 86, 87, 88, somewhere in that era) It has a low milage Jasper 6.9 liter diesel and a 4-speed manual tranny.

How much effort and expense am I looking at to strip out the twin I-beam front end and put an axle in the front and a transfer case and the related shafts/linkages etc. to make it all work?

Or should I just sell the thing? It's a strong running truck and it's in real decent shape for it's age, it's only 2wd though.

Yep, but check the front suspension mount crossmember it maybe different and have to be changed. Rangers and F-!50s are different and that crossmember is hot riveted with some huge rivets and then stitch welded to the frame rails. I was going to do it and then said **** it, too much work, just drive it. Use my beat and built Yota 4x4 for wheeling.

In the long run it is easier and cheaper to sell your truck and buy a good used 4x4....but if you have lots of free time, garage space, tools and good mechanical ability go for it.

yeah, in retrospect i was thinking swapping the ifs for a solid axle, now thats straight forward. i was looking at doing that on an 84 F250.

I would scour the junk yard for a wrecked f-350 and rob the axles and linkages, and t-case off of it.

That's probably a better use for it anyway. It has stump-pulling torque. I very rarely use 1st gear at all.

I'd probably spend about as much cash plus have a lot more problems to solve converting this truck vs. just buying another truck.

Thanks for the input
