Default Rocket class project(Warning lots of pics!)

So i was talking to harley0706(not sure if i can use his real name?) and he said i should share my project with this forum. So here we go. Well this was a project for my rapid prototyping class and my group built a rocket car. we have couple of versions and the pics are of the final version. I dont know really what to say about it so ask away. By the way the machine you see a part in is a Sony SLA.

nice but thats WAY too much steering throw for a rocket car. that would turn it into a rolling log in a nano second

pretty cool. that rapid prototyping tech has got to be one of the coolest.
so whats a sony sla? looking at it i would guess some kind of vacuum forming table, but that dosnt seem to be a typical product in sony's line up!

That is a nice looking setup. One thing I would do is make the rear axle width a bit wider. It will be more stable that way. I have built a few Estas powered cars before, not as nice as this one. I used 3/4" copper for the "D" size engine I think. One other thing to think about is rudder put in place and tied into your steering.

Yes that is to much steering but that was just for the photo. The sony machine is a SLA rapid prototyping machine that has a laser that hardens the resin layer by layer. its pretty cool to watch. Also we had the idea of doing the ruter in the rear but we had a dead line and couldnt get that done.:-(

Very Cool. The fun you can have with a stereolithography machine. Weve made some pretty cool stuff with those at the old mans office. Mech engineer by trade and builds models as a hobby. So if he needs a scale part for a plane or helicopter he makes it on the sla machine. cool stuff.

This is what they make.

The basic printing process goes like this:
  • You create a 3-D model of your object in a CAD program
  • A piece of software chops your CAD model up into thin layers -- typically five to 10 layers/millimeter
  • The 3-D printer's laser "paints" one of the layers, exposing the liquid plastic in the tank and hardening it
  • The platform drops down into the tank a fraction of a millimeter and the laser paints the next layer
  • This process repeats, layer by layer, until your model is complete

same process used to make the snug caps for the juggernauts... xcept he uses a SLA maching (I think thats right) not nearly the resolution you used and its woven for a little more rigidity

Looks great man!

One suggestion, buy a GOOD RADIO hahaha. I wouldn't want to lose total control over something stupid like that!

That is a cool machine, I think I need one of those in my garage
