Default So who's a Baja 1000 fan?

Well, I picked up a sad sack Kyosho Assault from the 'Bay. It was roughly in the condition of the Scorpion pictured below (this is from one of my eBay auctions). The chassis had trailing arm suspension and a rear engine kind of like a real beetle, so it inspired me...

Naturally, a quick disassembly and stripping of the parts ended me up at my home away from home (Prestige Powder Finishing)... The chassis is actually fire engine red, but my camera doesn't do it justice.

I also picked up an HPI Baja Beetle body from my LHS. The shocks are GPM units for the Mini LST.

The tires are a set of 2.0 Dynamite front spikes, and Duratrax 1.6 rear paddles...

Did someone say BAJA???

That is sick, looks a lot like a little class 5 V-Dub!

Needs some polished Centerlines w/ a Yokohama tire on it!

Heh heh... Well, the rears are 1.6"s... The fronts I wasn't too happy with in terms of overall diameter. So I did a little choppity chop. The tires are now the correct height for the rears.

I wanted to keep the majority of the parts era correct to the late 80's. The original yellow rims were dyed black with RIT. I'm still looking for a set of SEES rims to fit.

Plenty of chopping later, I was finished with the overall look of the body and the clearance for the suspension.

I'm no master painted, but I did my best to come up with a red and silver flame pattern. The paint doesn't look too shabby in person, and the transition between the silver and red is a black tear away pattern, so the flames have a ragged look. I think this is nice, but again, not a pro here...

They were made in the late 80's and fit any 1.6" size rim from Kyosho, Tamiya, etc.

Heh, well, if the body sits higher it shows the frame rails and doesn't looks scale IMHO.

This was all done in June. Since it was the start of my 3 months of summer vacation , I thought I'd drive down to Cape Hatteras to take some pictures (and take the wife to the beach). Maybe a little something for the desktop Dez?

Damn, if it wasn't for the lighthouse in the background, I would swear that was on the cost of Baja.
