| Sounds like some kind of scam to me, what do yall think?
A girl here at work has her cousing visiting her. She bought a laptop and got a free printer with it and put it up on Craigs List because she didn't need it and could use a few extra bucks, she was asking $50. This is in VA now, so a guy contacts her saying he's in England and will give her $85 and send a MO. So she gets it today and there are 2 MO's in the envelope but instead of being for $85, they are for $850. He also aranged that a "friend" would come pick up the printer to send to him. I don't think they are scamming her per se as much as using her to launder or something with the money. Maybe even fund a terorist cell, I'm thinking he will say, oops, I sent the wrong envelope and can you cash them and my friend will pick up the cash. I'm more worried that she has Lord knows who coming by to pick up the "printer".

She found something on CL about it. These international "buyers" send bogus MO's, seller cashes them, friend picks up the money and by the time she realizes the MO's were bogus, the money is long gone. Yeah, thats what worries me, she's small, cute and alone in her house and they have her address. I tolder her to send the guy a link to the CL scam thing, tell the guy she's ripping up the MO's and if he contacts her again she's reporting this to the local authorities and the FBI. Probably can't do anything but sounds serious. |

If you look on CraigsList they have many examples of these in their "Avoid Scams" section. This type of scam is older than dirt but I guess a sucker is born every day. |

Yeah thats what I figure, these scammers are playing the numbers. They target enough people they'll get a bite, but they can't go and follow up in person with everybody. I hope.

if at all possible, I'd ALWAYS meet at a neutral point like a sfaeway parking lot or something, and during the daytime, but this sounds like a scam anyway. Besides, CASH ONLY!!!!! but even that can be faked... Craigslist isn't really about international orders, it's more of an "electronic yard sale". Why would someone from England, or even the next state over be looking on Craigslist for a $50 printer?! |
