Default 14er summit?

I want to summit a 14er with one of my rigs. Right now I'm thinking either Princeton or Harvard, as these two are minutes from my house. Shooting for late july or august. Anybody done this before? Anyone want to join?

That sounds fun. Not sure if I have enough batteries though. How long is the trail up those ones?

I used to hike Greys and Torreys every year for a while. It would be really fun, but I think it is something like 2-3 hours each way. I could be wrong it has been a few years since i went up them.

I'm considering Princeton, Harvard, or Yale.

There are two main routes up Mt. Yale. They range from 9 - 11 miles.

There is only one main route up Mt. Princeton. The route is about 13 miles.

There are multiple routes up Mt. Harvard. They range from 11 - 15 miles.

Honestly I have no idea how fast one can hike while driving a toy truck. I'm guessing the shortest time estimate would be around 6hrs each way, and the longest being 10hrs each way. Is this even a realistic idea? How can I make sure I have enough battery power? There's got to be an equation that'll tell me how many mah's I need?

I bet Holmes or Grizzly4x4 would have an equation for you. Of course it will depend on your rig weight, motor, servo, etc. to get an exact number.

I think my rig based on a medium to low throttle will do roughly 2 miles for every 2000-3000mah of battery. Just a mild guess. Of course if the trail says 10 miles your crawler will probably do more like 12 or 13, just based on rolling, reversing and trying some lines multiple times.

It would be really fun regardless... Unless you have to carry your rig up and down, that doesn't sound too fun.

You got my wheels turning now though, I would like to give it a try. I just need to make a rig that holds bigger batteries first.

I'm thinking, the weekend of Saturday August 17th. I have a 4 days off there, and I think that's enough time in advance to properly prepare... Also an august summit will have very little snow cover if any, and should be decent conditions.

The more I think about the logistics of doing a 14er, the harder this becomes...

Turtle & big daddy: If you guys are serious, I'd love to have you join. Will august work? I think the more people shooting for this, the more likely we'll actually summit. We could even pick any other mountain if you have others in mind. Right now I'm just researching the ones around me, but if you guys wanted to join and wanted to do another mountain, I'm totally open to suggestions.

This is cool, We should shoot for a group summit. I'm assuming most of you are in the denver area? If so, maybe we should shoot for 14er closer to you guys. I'm going to look into Mt. Bierstadt a little bit. I've heard it's a fairly easy 14er and it's closer to the city.

Found your thread...

you say you had 9000mahs... So maybe bring twice that to be safe this time?

Do you think Bierstadt would be good in late august?

I think that would be more than enough if your rig is efficient. I started about a mile or two below the summit of Guanella Pass, plus I was running in snow and freezing temps. I think August should be ok, the biggest thing we might encounter is people, I'm sure dome may complain at us.

There is a cool thread on here about a guy in Europe I believe that did alot of mountains with his EMaxx.

1.9 or 2.2 is a tough question. Right now I'm thinking 2.2, but who knows? We'll see which rig is in good condition when the time comes.

I have to take my girlfriend to Boulder tomorrow, so I'll be heading towards the front range. On my way back home I may take a detour and check out Bierstadt (parking situation, trail heads, etc)...

For those of you who think you wanna join, does Saturday August 17th work? Any other suggestions for a date?

While I think this is a really cool idea, this is the reason I don't want to do it.

I would be much more interested in doing an expedition like this on a 4-wheel drive trail like Holy Cross. Somewhere I'm less likely to run into a conflict with a hater.

If you do it take lots of pics.

I'll be the first to admit I'm pretty new to the rc crawler scene. But I've been out on my local trails at least a dozen days or so this year and have yet to have anyone complain. I understand running as a group may be a bit different. Do you guys really have conflicts with people on trails?
