| How about a "search" how to
I have been thinking that a search how to would be a nice addition. I see many people complaining about repeated questions from noobs like me. Now my guess is that this site is SQL based and correct me if I am wrong, when searching one must use "" + - ** symbols to get better results around here and in many other forums. I am no database guru to do this write up my self, I just tried using the above when searching remembering my early internet days and saw it helped big time. I actually always find what I am looking for with very narrow results. I would also suggest this how to being on top of the bulletin board in red lettering for everybody to see. This way everytime somebody logs in it is the first thing he sees. I can do a basic writeup but it will need loads of help and input from the guys that know what is really going on with the search function, plus I do not have the best knowledge of terminology since I am Greek. Of course I tried to search "search", "search+how+to" etc before posting this |

Use the "Advanced search" feature, you will find what you are looking for. Maybe I'll start a "Search" service! $.99 and I'll find and link all the info you need for said search |

If there is a question about a RC crawler I guarantee you can find the answer in a search on here. Search in the correct forum or do a advanced search looking in the entire board. The answers are there you just have to put the work in!

OK Help me out here. I want to search for a certain string. Say "axial drive shaft" I ONLY want the results where those 3 words are together in that order. If is says axial drive, but not shaft right after that, i don't want to see it. How do I do that? Thanks |

Try "axial drive shaft" with "Search Titles Only" selected from the drop down box. You can also try this while isolating particular forums one at a time; it's about the best you can do, unless you were also looking for posts by a particular person. The How-To would be a two-line sticky, but well posted. EDIT: The above--while not searching any particular sub-forum--produced eight total results. Last edited by JeepinOR; 08-02-2009 at 06:28 PM. |

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/searc...earchid=808346 I think the biggest thing is searching titles only. That helps allot. Searching threads, seems to work best if you know the actual title of the thread. Searching titles for key words in certain sections is the way to go..

I now see that I do have a point after all. Acrosteve said clearly: "I ONLY want the results where those 3 words are together in that order." To get exactly what he wants, he needs to search for: "axial+drive+shaft" . This way he will only get results that include these words in that order with a single spacing between then and the exact lettering. For this exact phrasing and lettering I got 11 results in the Axial section while when I typed "axial+drive+shafts" I got 10 results most of them different. |

Well, I still don't get it. I did an advanced search and searched for "warthog+setup" and only searched titles. I did all open forums, because I want to search everywhere for those two words in that order. I got 263 results and I did not look through all 11 pages of results, but the 1st page did not include ANY threads with those two words in the title. What is my problem? |

^ I just did the same same search in the AX10 section for titles only and did not come up with any results. Maybe you can try searching for posts.

Yes if you only search "warthog" then you will surely get many results. In the case of a single word search you do not really need the "" symbols. SQL recognizes single words as whole and true.

From my experience the simpler the search terms, the better results you get back. I try to use one word only as key words, works best for me. Looking for a certain chassis, search the name. If your looking for tips on that chassis, read the build threads, lots of tips and ideas in those. Last edited by Reflection; 08-05-2009 at 07:38 AM.

Well don't get disappointed, if your search returns nothing it is probably because there is no thread with "warthog setup" in the title or in the posts. Try searching for more specific terms like shocks, motor, links etc. Or you can go general as reflection said which will most probably get you all the answers you need from the build threads.
