Default Search needs to be fixed!

This is an old rant that I've been meaning to post.

I don't know if the admins can change this or not, but I've been pretty frustrated when I try to search something, and it tells me it could not be searched because its simply too short. Now, in a world of crawling where every group, chassis, wheel, motor, problem has an acronym, if I want to search XRS, or BEC, or SW2, I'm not allowed. If I search "SW2 Chassis", it only searches chassis, or if I search "Novak XRS" it will only search Novak. Even worse, put up a search for "LRP AI" and it won't search at all.

This is a major flaw with the search, I've had alot of trouble trying to search basic things because they're too short.

Anyway to fix this?

I agree, I've run into this problem many times as well. Try searching a board to info on AA batteries. Every other thread has the word battery in it.

I dont want to put down Rccrawler, the sweetest rcc site, but I too have had some difficulties using search. I type in something like a digger, and nothing really comes up about it. Its alright, though. the system doesnt think on its own, and I like the thread list anyways. Happy crawling- the clodfather

What the hell is a digger?

Searched Google and came up with something like this:

BTW... this should be in Chit-Chat, no tech at all.

Use *'s around something that is too short to search on it's own.

For example, to search TLT, you would type *TLT* in the search box, or use *XRS* for a search on the Novak XRS.

Edit: Destroyer beat me to it

Here is a trick someone here pointed out to me -

If your search term is three letters or less, use an asterisk before and after it, like so - *car*. It'll also find plural versions, like cars, and some words it may be the root of, like carbon. But it should help a bit, at least.

OK as per your wishes I have set the database so that you can now search 3 letter words. We will keep an eye on our database and if we start to run into problems we will have to switch it back.

Here is why it was set to 4 letters.

Quote:
When using the vBulletin default search, this option limits the size of indexed words. The smaller this number is, the larger your search index, and conversely your database is going to be.
Now, it costs us money to host the database, and by switching the search to allow 3 letter searches we just increased the database size a ton.

So if you would like to help us keep this option alive please,

Thank You for adjusting the search function. I also learned something new today about the *'s. It was taxing trying to find dual esc set up's, or looking for info on BBY RBX chassis.
