For running 2 380 size motors, you can use almost any 1/10th scale single motor ESC. Just wire the motors in parallel and run it on 7.2V. You'll need different motors since the the stockers don't have good torque at 14.4V, and lowering the voltage will hurt it even more. If you are going all out, the the traxxas EVX, novak super duty XR, castle creations mamba max, and the HPI e-savage ESC, and a couple others can handle 14.4V. The stock ESC isn't bad and mine has held up to a lot of abuse testing different motors, but it just doesn't have a drag brake.

Not a bad price but it will only handle 7 cells.

I have been wondering about this too. I was considering getting a prebuilt from Tower and throwing in a Traxxas xl-5 with 8 cells. I assume the RTR setup, which uses 2 batts, really only sends 7.2 to each motor, right? So that ESC would send more volts, which should give the motors a bit more umph, right? Or, am I wrong and the stock esc really sends 14.4 to each? Thoughts? |

They are getting 14.4v each and don't have any power on much less voltage. 7 cells didn't work for me, it way too underpowered to have fun with. It would drive around fine but climbing anything was another story.

I stand corrected. Any possibility a more appropriate motors for 7.2-9.6? Weird setup from Duratrax here. 2 batts seems a pain for such a small truck. |

They have been working on a better motor. There is another thread in this section that goes into detail. 2 of the 2/3a batteries are not that hard to find a place for, I mounted all 12 cells on the front axle of mine. Pics are in my thread "cc on a budget".

Missed that thread. (never mind, I did read that, just apparently no real answers found yet.) I am not talking about mounting, but rather charging two batteries, buying two batteries, etc. For such a cheap truck, it takes quite a bit to get it going. If it could run off 1 battery you could go quite a bit easier (and cheaper). That is the point I am trying to make. Plus, I am not fond of the "pile of batteries" look on the front axle, especially that many. I realize the benefits, it just looks too hack for my tastes and needs. I have really wanted to buy this truck, but the electronics issue has kept me out. From what I have read, the stock esc is crap, and the only good ones are quite a bit more (evx, etc). That, then I need two batteries, plus each charge cycle then takes twice as long. I have a charger, I wouldn't buy a 2nd just for this. Those are the issues I am considering. If I could use a $30 Traxxas XL-5 with the stock motors (I happen to have 8 2/3a batts laying around) then I would buy the truck right now. Last edited by suchmuchfun; 04-03-2009 at 10:25 PM. Interesting stuff. I'm running mine with a 6 AAs and a Futaba MC230CR, throttle response is very smooth but I'll see how the power goes. I might get a set of the 11K motors and up the cell count to the max for the ESC. I have a small GM Racing V3R that says it goes up to 10 cells, but I didn't like the feel of the throttle response in limited driving with it around the living room.

This is my setup: 3S LiPo 2x DSYS MD28DCR 2x MIG 400 3LiXX (6-12V) with original pinions Hobbico CS-170 Futaba R604FS I have to test it more to make conclusions, but the first impression was good. It has enough wheelspeed and torque for me. (I'm not hard core comp racer). |
