Default need some help with breakdown voltage

The super rooster says to use capacitors with a breakdown voltage of 50v. Could someone give me a quick rundown of what that means. Maybe some do's and don'ts in relation to rc cars.

Thanks in advance
Joe

"0.1 uF (50V) capacitor"

....0.1 is the value capacitance power in micro farad
....50V is the max. value of the voltage that the capacitor can handle, over than that will permanantly distroy the capacitor and/or the whole circuit.

As the safety rule .... always use at least double or even triple the voltage value of the working voltage because there always be spike happened.

NOTE: Some types of capacitor are polarity as for DC voltage applications, normally will have indication as "+" for positive voltage and "black strip" for negative voltage. Some are non-polarity types, therefore, can be installed either way.

Caution: Always know exactly what and how to do before you do it!

So can I assume that a 25V capacitor is fine for an rc running on 7.2 volts?

Those are called electrolytic capacitors.

Thanks Jason... I didn't want to get too much electronics, just try to keep it most simple. But here is some details of capacitor types, in case someone would be interest.
