Default School me on batteries and heat

Back in the day (before the internet and before more than a few of you were born I'm sure) I used to keep my batteries (NiCads) in a cooler before charging with a couple of blue ice packs as this was rumored to allow the batteries to take a charge better and prolong the battery life. Does this make a difference or is it an old RCers tale (with reguards to Nimh)? Also should I let the batteries cool down (on their own or atop a blue ice pack) before running them after they've been charged?

not sure about storing them on ice, but ni-mh runs best right off the charger - right when they're nice and hot. just be sure to let them cool down thoroughly after you run them, and before charging them again. maybe the ice would help then?

According to LRP no active cooling should be used on batteries, and that even includes a fan. Their argument is that it will only cool the outside of the battery causing diffrence between the core and outside that will harm the battery.

For great info on batteries in RC check out the Battery Clinic website.

But like everything else, gather info and figure out what applies to you.

Nimh should be charged from room temp, and is best used when the cells are around 145f and higher. Lipo should also be charged at room temp, and works best when the cells are around 120 to 130f.
