30W for smaller gauges, say 14 and higher. 60W for lower than that.

I use a 230 watt gun for batteries. Fast heat and quick.

30/15 watt for wires and connections.

It's not only the wattage, it's also the mass. Soldering batts, for example, needs an iron with a huge tip to work good. See, when you solder something you must heat it up first, which draws the heat out of the tip. If it's heavy you can complete the job before the heat drops below the melting point of the solder. If what you are soldering is "big" like a cell, the heat of a 10 gigawatt fine point iron aint going to cut it. If you are soldering motor wires, a big huge tip will suck because it's so unwieldy. Generally speaking, the tip matters more than the wattage. Wattage comes into play for recovery time. How fast after you draw the heat down (because you soldered something) will the heat return? That's wattage.
I use a 60W iron and have 3 tips; fine, normal, and silly huge. 60W is a bit nuts for the fine tip, though.

Anyone who uses those gun type jobs with the super high power rating pretty much doesn't know their *** from a hole in the ground. They suck. Period.

"w" most likely weller.this is my point.i use an ungar brand solder iron which is an older version of the weller and after 16 years and after lord knows all the batts and wires i soldered still goes strong.
as for haveing more wattage then needed ,there's nothing wrong with that.better to have more then not enough .using the correct tip is what's important

just out of curiousity, why do they suck?they'll do the job needed and last.just don't understand the point????over kill for the job, yes.or does it have to do with the tip they may normally have?
