| Saving LiPo's
Anyone had any luck breathing life back into a lipo that has been discharged to 0? I keep forgetting to unplug stuff, LOL. Time to make that master switch off the ESC battery plug i guess.

I have saved mine after it being plugged in for 4 days. Keep in mind.....do this in a safe place! My battery was a 3 cell and was only reading about 2 or 3 volts. I hooked it up to my regular charger and monitored the voltage until it got up to about 9.5 volts. After that, I quickly threw it on my lipo charger and let it charge and balance. I do not know if this will work since yours is at 0. If it was me, I would charger it slow for a little then turn the amps up to get it to 9.5 if its a 3 cell. With that being said, I would not recommend trying to save a dead lipo. |

I have a maxamps 6000mah that i ran to 0. I ended up having to charge it as reguler NIMH at .5 amps to get the volts back up to 6.0v then i charged with the lipo setting at 1.0 amps, it took several hours. If you do try to charge it keep a very close eye on it. I have charged it several times since and its still working today. BUT i only charge it at 4 amps max now just to be safe. x2 "Keep in mind.....do this in a safe place!" |

I have brought quite a few lipo's back from the dead for people using the same methods described above but I would charge as a NiCad at 1amp till the voltage was high enough to run through a balance lipo charge the only drawback is the cells will never really be the same they will not last as long as far as runnign duration or overall battery life.

My son left his truck on and drained it to 0 and my charger wouldn't even read it as it would keep reading "error". So I just threw it away and bought a new one. Kinda ticked me off as it was a brand new one and it only had one charge on it. But not worth the chance of trying to bring it back up

It damages the structure when they are discharged below 3v/cell. At 0 volts, you are certainly asking for trouble at some time or another. Your best bet is to trash it.

Like other people have said, the best bet is to just trash it. But if you are pig headed enough to try it and possibly burn down your house, do the smart thing and at least use a lipo charging sack. You may get away with only a little smoke damage rather than not having a roof over your head and no worldly possesions anymore.

I put mine in a 3 gal. aluminum stock pot. Drilled many, many holes in the lid and drilled a hole in the side close to the bottom where I attached a plastic weather proof box connector to stick the charger leads in. Then I set a 20 lb. dumb-bell on top. I charge all my batteries in there. Even NiMH can be dangerous. A $40 stock pot beats patching drywall all weekend.

i just hope when you charge any battery in that pot, with the "plastic weatherproof connector" in the side... that if you were to have a fire, you dont have any flammables beside it. just to give you an example, Lithium-polymer batteries burn around 3000 F lithium inside the batteries will ignite when it meets oxygen. no spark needed. as for the plastic thing that you run your wires through... it probably melts around 500F. So, all you'll have is a jet of fire shooting out the side. i would highly advise charging in a LiPo sack. I even stick mine in a brick fire box... just in case. Or you could get one of those small fireproof safes... usually around $40 and up... and dont go with one of those cheapy import LiPo sacks... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBrzqlj_n-I | |
