| Lipo FIRE!!!
My buddy had a 4800 3 cell lipo that went bad, so tonight at work he put it on a nicad charger and charged it up to 8500 mah! One battery read 250 deg so we unplugged the charger and let it sit for about 15 min. Then we put a screw driver on the end of a pipe and he poked one of the cells and it started sparking like a volcano and then burst into flames about 3 feet in the air, then The next cell burst and so on! It was an amazing fire, I ran! It was so funny! Be careful lipos are no joke the fire warnings are for real LOL! |

What kind of battery was it? Not that it matters. Last edited by Rockcrawler; 02-04-2009 at 01:50 AM. |

I've never seen a warning that you shouldn't charge dead cells as NiCds up to twice their capacity and past boiling point and then poke at them, you should sue! |

A good lipo should never shoot flames under any circumstances. Puff, pop, smoke and stink for sure, but not flames beyond the covers burning. If the chemistry is stable and the needed additives are in the cells, it should self extinguish. Most of the current lipos would not pass a real UN test which is required for them to be shipped in this country at all by any means. Many claim to have passed, but 3' flames prove otherwise. Hard to have cheap, consistent quality and safety all in the same sentence. Buyer beware... we think a storm is coming and at some point the rules may actually be enforced. Unfortunately it usually takes loss of life or property before anything actually happens. We have a few of our truly UN tested, nonflaming 2s hardcased lipos left and we are stepping out of the lipo market until it settles down. Tekin Prez |

Guys I am ashamed to even be on the same board with the likes of you. Purposly overcharging a lipo to a point where it explodes is not only dangerous but stupid. What were you thinking????? |

UN testing includes: Overcharge similiar to this Impact - a pretty good smashing of the cells dead short - .1ohm resistor short and a few other easier ones Non of the test are allowed to produce flames and pass....technically. There are very few legal lipos in this country. So the question is do we care? Are we willing to accept the risk? It appears we are at least for now. Lets just hope they do not have peanuts in them or are full of melamine. Most brands do not even really know where their cells come from. They also may not be the same manufacturer batch to batch since they buy thru brokers or traders. Many are rejects and over runs sold cheap. Got a few grand and sticker to put on a 100 packs... your in the lipo business. Before the explosion of lipo manufacturers, many of which are going down quickly now, it took 50K to 100K to put a good lipo on the market with testing and qty commitment. Now it cost about as much as a trip to Vegas and carries about the same risk and chance of success. Last edited by Tekin Prez; 02-04-2009 at 11:13 PM. |

I am preaching a little and miffed we cannot sell a good lipo and make a profit. My Engineering morals showing their face and my business side that is just annoyed. I honestly wish I did not know as much as I do about it and could just claim ignorance. They all work pretty good and most applications are not pushing them very hard, but when things go bad some are definitely better than others. They were terrible, then got better and now we are pushing capacity and discharge rates to the point that we expect it to get worse again before the Ax falls and something serious happens in a plane, a wharehouse or peoples homes and vehicles. |
