| High pitch whine noise, ack?!!
Do all ESC make that annoying noise or are some quieter than others? I want a quiet car, that noise drives me nuts. Suggestions on which ESC are quiet? Looking at brushed type btw. |

The majority of brushed ESC all make some noise like that, at the very slow speeds. Some brushless (Castle Creations) ESCs are even worse. Turn up the music.

You get use to it after a while, but they all make some kinda noise like that at low speeds. If you think that's bad, try using a Hi Tech 5955 servo.

What about reducing the noise? Say maybe running 6 cells instead of 8 cells, which is quieter? |

i talked to castle creations about this issue because the mamba max is particularly loud. I think they said that it is the BEC that makes that noise and that all BECs make noise. I think it was the BEC at least. I'd say all ESCs make a noise but some are quieter than others and some may be different frequencies as well that might be less noticeable to the human ear. Usually the motor is just as loud or louder than the ESC though (except the mamba max).

So only one person has a quiet ESC? How about the BEC theory, anyone running that and notice noise or not? |

Honestly thinkin about it now, I run Sidewinders in all three of my rigs, and haven't paid much attention to it because the 5955 servo's on those make so much noise. Thinking about it now though, one of those rigs I have the very quiet running 7955 servo, and you don't really hear a sound when running it if I'm remembering right. I can also note on all of those I'm running an external BEC, so the BEC being what's making noise could be why my ESC's are quiet. Honestly pretty much any you get may or may not make some noise. Depending on your motor the motor may end up making more noise than the ESC even. Then on top of that you may end up with a servo that makes alot of noise. Most likely none of these will be enough to wake the neighbors, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. |

I've had my FX-r for over a year and I have yet to hear any noise come from it. All I hear is the transmission gears on my rig.

the noise problem is the new dog across the street barking and throwing itself into the window trying to get to my rc. with a msc the dog just sits there watching it go by. put a esc in and the dog freaks out.

| msc? mechanical speed control? they still make those things? haha just teasin. I'd say you nailed it. The noise problem IS the dog. It's not your problem. If anything, I'd be complaining to the owners of the dog. And if they happen to complain about your electric rc crawler (the quietest rc cars out there), get a nitro and teach them the old "it could always be worse" story. I don't think you have anything to worry about, dude. If you're still concerned, maybe just don't drive it in view of the dog?

I'll second, or third the Tekin FXRs being very quiet. I wanted to say it was silent, but I could not remember for sure. My friend runs one on his AX-10, and I just bought two for myself. I remembered it being a lot quieter then most, but I'm so used to the noise, I never paid attention to it. If your speed controller is silent, then you'll probably hear the servos whining. I don't think you'll ever win.

The whine comes from the ESC's switching rate. The battery voltage is switched on and off at a high rate of speed. It is measured in cycles or even 1000's of cycles per second. If the switching rate gets too high to where you can't hear it anymore you get what is called RF heating. The motor will actually heat up but that is another topic in itself. Don't worry there are no ESC's out there that will do that. The motor also has an effect on how loud it is. The motor will act as a loudspeaker and amplify or attenuate the noise. In other words some motors will make the noise louder and some will be quieter.
