Default How to power the 3racing winch

Hey guys,

I just got a 3racing winch and this thing is soooo cool. I am absolutely in love with scale RC . Just wondering if it is possible to have the winch powered off of the receiver (from the ESC) like my steering servo. My ESC is a traxxas XL-5 and it has a BEC of 6.0v I figured this would be a little short on the voltage but I really don't want to mount another battery on my truck because I'm happy with the performance the way it is... Does anyone know if this works? (I would try it myself but my receiver box is buried in 3 pounds of silicone so I'd like to know before I dig that out)

It will probably work - but the chances of killing the motor while working the winch and steering are pretty high - I installed a CC bec on mine and have not had any probs running everything - I wired the bec to power both the winch and the servo and left the esc to power the rx - works perfect

No need for a second battery. Just solder the battery leads off the pcb for the winch to your main battery connection. I have mine soldered to the deans on my battery hookup with my bec. The wire that plugs into the reciever doesnt power it just allows use of winch control through radio. Hope some of this helps

That xl-5s internal bec is putting out nowhere near 6.0v.

I see I didn't think about the power being shared between everything like that. Thanks. Sorry for my ignorance but what is a CC BEC. I know a BEC is basically a reserved amount of power for accesories from the battery by the ESC but what is the CC part? castle creations? it is an external device seperate from the ESC?

Thank You

Highlandcrawler: I'm not sure on that, its just what I read in the towerhobbies stats listing for the ESC (6v BEC)... Again thanks for the input because sounds like it would be severely underpowered either way. Guess I'll have to invest in a CC BEC like Yawzer mentioned.

Thanks!

I understand its like the instructions suggest about branching the connection with a Y, except doing it with soldering. Would it be possible to just branch off the power plugs on the ESC side of my deans? If I branch off the battery side, it would limit me to only that battery and I have another one ordered.

____battery_____ [=deans=]____< ESC & leads for winch

would this cause a short?

Sorry by main battery connection i meant the esc side of the battery connection not on the battery itself. Most esc manufactures claim these crazy internal bec ratings which are silly. Do yourself a favor and get a castle bec then you know how much power is going where
