Default killed 3 servos....now what?

ok..so i had a cheap futaba servo that stripped 15 min into crawling
then i got a cys 200oz one from crawford and it died on me due to a loose connection internally, which crawford happily replaced no questions asked....but now i've killed the replacement that sent me.

i was running a tq2 and the crawford one worked AWESOME...loved it..but now i have a 3pm, and apparently i need a digital servo instead of an analog...

so, which one?!?!?

i looked at the hs5645mg...but i hear it tends to strip a gear, so that's not good for $50

a buddy runs some ckrc wiggles...and says they're digital, but he also thought an hs645mg was digital...so are they?

are there any other super budget 200oz+ servos that are digital????

I cannot say for sure but I use a TowerPro 995MG with my DX3R at 5.5ms with no problem. Supposedly only digi servos work at that latency.

You should just spend the money on a 400oz servo and be done. You have seen what $50 gets you. Hassle, headache, and burned up servos.

I don't see why you would have to use a digital servo... can't use you just change the frame rate on your radio?

I would also suggest you pony up for a good servo and be done with it. Make sure to set the endpoints.

That looks just like a Hitec servo. Is it programmable on a Hitec programmer or are just the gears and case the same? Also, for $10 more TCS is selling the Hitec HS-7955TG servos.

You do not need a digital servo.
3PM radios have EPA settings that most servo's can understand. Setting the EPA correctly can prevent a lot of undue stress on a servo. Without it, the servo is always trying to move further then your steering mechanics allow, burning them up quickly.

Good Hitec and JR servos (300 oz plus) can go a long way and take a beating.
I went through a couple TowerPro's in the beginning. You get what you pay for with them.

I have not gone that route yet. I found a way to package a $30 1/4 scale servo (HUGE) on my BMV and have not stripped the nylon (yes nylon) gears yet. Even running modified 5.8" Claws.

both tcs and stormer have the 7955 for $100. when i was looking for a servo for my scx, the choice basically came down to $140 for an jr 8711 or $100 for the 7955. futaba and airtronics both make servos that have more torque than the jr 8711 for about the same price ($140), but i couldn't find anybody that had them in stock.

well...i read online that HRS mode will kill analog servos and i should be in PPM....but, i have NO clue what that means..or 90% of the other crap on my radio haha

so a 7955 or the cs170? i keep hearing mixed reviews on hitech servo's...which is why i haven't really looked into them

you need to read the manual it tells you how to change it out of hrs mode which is the reason your frying the analog servos

depending on the servo... I guess... some servo will work only a certain voltage range... some will have the maximum power/torque at a certain voltage... so if that is the servo that you have then a BEC might help you out.

in my own case, my servo won't run unless it is 6v or lower (4.8v)... so I need to power it with a 6volt power to maximize the torque... so i made my own 6volt voltage regulator

depends, if your ESC doesn't put out 6v or is low on amperage a BEC will improve your steering power no doubt, if it does and you have no issues with amping out then I wouldn't bother with the BEC, but since you seem to be rather budget minded I'm guessing you ESC doesn't have the best BEC. just remeber to disable the BEC in the ESC or you can fry the BEC in either or both the ECS and BEC.

Start with Tx off.
While holding down the SEL button, turn the Tx on.
This will take you into PP - Sys
Press SEL screen = Copy
Press SEL screen = Clr
Press SEL screen = Name
Press SEL screen = HRS/PPM

i've been reading up on servos quite a bit and it seems like jr and hitec are heads and shoulders above the other makers. both have their detractors, but i think that's due to servos in crawlers being frequently put into situations that can be very damaging to them (even if the epa's are properly set, etc.). by all account, both hitec and jr have outstanding customer support and stand behind their products. i was thinking about ordering another 7955 yesterday and did see that stormer has the airtronics 94780m (~425 oz-in, 0.15 s reponse) in stock right now for $110, so that's another to look into.
