Default Should I change or upgrade my motor/esc?

First, let me say that I have very little experience with crawling, but I am working on it. To this point, I am relying on lots of reading about other opinions and experience.

I was working on some items for my wish list to build a AX-10 based rig. My son does have a AX-10 with a Novak Rooster and 55t motor, but I have been saving it for his birthday in two weeks. I have only spent a very little time actually driving it, but like I said, I have no other experience to gather from.

Anyway, the esc I decided on for my wish list as the Tekin FX-R and I figured I would go with a 44T motor, possibly even a 35T. This is due to me wanting a little more speed out of it that I get with the 55T Novak.

That was my wish list. I ended up getting a used rig from another member here and it has a Sidewinder with a 55T Integy motor. Now, the Sidewinder was one of my top 3 choices, but it was not the top.

Anyway, I will just be banging around with my son and don't plan on competing, but I do think i would like to get some more speed out of it that i am getting with the Novak combo. Also, I want to get the most bang for my $$$, and don't want to spend any more than I have to.

Cast your vote and give me some feedback.

Thanks

I would go with the FX-R. If you are looking for more wheel speed you can use a 3s lipo with the FX-R where the Rooster is only "rated" for 2s.

For now, i want to stay with the NiMh batteries I have. I might replace them with lipo as they fail, but I don't anticipate that happening for quite some time. I have 5 fairly new packs for the 2 rigs.

It is a good idea, however it goes against my desire to keep the cost down.

Besides, i think my charger will only do 2s. (Intellipeak ICE)

I suppose a brushless motor is not out of the question, but they don't seem to be a smooth on the lower end - or so I read.

I see several votes for keeping the sidewinder and getting a new motor, but no suggestions for which motor to get.

Anybody have an opinion?

The fxr does have a better drag brake and is more compact than the sidewinder but for bashing (alot of guys comp with them too) I see no reason the change it. The sidewinder may even be more reliable than an fxr and will handle 3s and even unsensored brushless. For wheelspeed/torque ya can't beat 3c lipo (unless ya go 4s). A holmes/warrior handwound 45-35 will make a big difference and if ya want to go big a holmes 7t/10t puller will "get her done". I run a holmes 500 puller in my axial but it makes heat and needs to be geared really low but on 3s it outruns my comp moa.

If all your doing is bashing with your son then I would highly suggest just keep what you have esc wise and get yourself a new motor. If oyu want to have a decent drag break you need to go with a Handwound motor as the sidewinders drag break is not to good. I would go with a Holmes Hobbies handwound in a 35t. That should get you exactly what your looking for without having to spend a ton of coin.

So for brushed motors, the TorqueMaster Pro Handwound is the top dog?

The top dog brushed motors are the large 5t, 7t and 10t cobalt pullers from Holmes but they are pricey and fairly long motors. Your probably better off going with a 540 hand wound motor in the 35t or 40t range. Probably the wildest 540 motor out right now is the Warrior R/T 35T from JP. Its got a 10mm comm for tons of power but the motor will pull a lot of amps so 2/3As won't cut it.

I guess i want a nice balance between speed and batt life.

But don't we all?

I wonder if a 7T puller would fit in my warthog. I am thinking not, esp if I want to add a dig at some point.

I have used several different motors and as far as 540 cans go I prefer the Holmes Torque Masters. They are a great motor and give the best balance of all the 540 can motors I have tried.
