Default Call me supernOob - motor testing question

OK, so I'm putting together a Venom Creeper. It's just for fartin' around, no comps - don't think there's anything up here anyway.
I have an old 27T Trinity Monster Horsepower Stock motor I've pulled out of my aged Marui Ninja (yes, my stuff is old). Back in '98 I fried the ESC turning it with a 7 cell pack (Futaba MC210CB) ... so ... I want to see if the motor is still working, I tried just direct connecting a 9V battery to it (but I'm guessing there's not enough grunt) I got the motor to twitch ... that's about it. I can spim the shaft by hand and it seems fine there so not seized. I'm guessing I need to hook it up to an ESC to provide enough juice to spin it? I don't want to risk smoking my only ESC (cheap DTX intellispeed, rooster crawler on the way though).

short version - can a 27T be spin tested just hooking it up to a 9v battery?

why? because it's the only motor I have (beside a couple old mabuchi/johnson drill motors)

thanks for any help.
Dave

No go, but ... Ryobi to the rescue ... used an 18V drill battery (just touched it) and the motor spun up perfectly. Crisis averted ... now I just have to bring my old 2/3A 6cell packs back to life ... hopefully it's just the result of my crappy soldering skills 4yrs ago (this'll teach me for just boxing everything up and stuffing it in a closet for 4yrs).
