Default charging a new battery

Hello i have a new 6cell 7.2v 1500mAh NiMH the small A size. my charger is a onyx 230 my question is i have looked in the search and i have found lots of good info. i just want to make sure i am doing the charging right. i have charged the pac at 1.5A it charged to 1520 mAh or so and was not shuting off the pack was getting hot i still could hold my hand there but was hot. i unpluged the pack and let cool. was i doing somthing wrong thanks for any help and i will go and look around search some more thanks

The internal resistance of the typical AA or A battery is high. Hence the heat at the 1C charge you were trying.

Lower your charge rate to only about 0.3 - 0.7 amps and you should be better off.

In addition to lowering the rate you may want to lower the mv for cut-off if possible. SubC NIMH use around 5 , but if they are AA or 2/3A then use around 3 if possible.
