Default Hi-tec

I've got a Hitec servo hs-645MG twice now I've striped the metal gear inside are the hitec servos not that good? I'm running hammers with 8oz in each tire and I'm not pushing the servo hard at all what gives?
Is there a better servo for about the same money stronger faster and dosent break easy! Thanks for any info I can get keith.
Almost forgot I'm running two bateries on this truck one lipo for the esc(sidewinder) and a five cell NI-MH 1400 for the steering.

The 645 is your standard servo for crawlers, ok power and strength. I have replaced gears in those servos more times than I care to admit. The metal gears are strong, but tend to wear fast. Many times the damage to the geartrain is done in a fall.I use to keep a spare set in my box. There are much better servos out there, but you have to pay for them. In my opinion the investment in a performance servo like a hi-tec 7955, jr ds8711 or Futaba s9157, to name a few, is well worth the price of admission.

It's not a great choice for steering. Any servo over 200 oz will fare much better.
Another culprit of premature servo failure is servo horn length, both the gears and the motor will have a lighter load with a shorter horn......as long as you get the stroke from it.
If you've dialed EPAs out of your steering you could benefit with a shorter horn.
