Default Are these lipos dead?

Hey guys

I bought this pair of Mystery 2200mah 3S 25C packs used a while ago, and today I got the chance to run them for the first time. They had been balanced and stored at about 3.8-3.9v per cell.

I charged/balanced one of them(one on the left) last night and ran it today with a Feigao 380c motor rated @50 amps, within the 2200mah 25c limit. The ESC stopped getting power in the middle of a run. I threw it back on the charger to see what was going on and it started beeping first for No Battery, then cell #3 showed 4.95v and then <2v. It went through all 3 alerts every time I reconnected it. It would sometimes show voltage for cells that don't exist, #4 and #6. Cells #1 and #2 were ~4v each. Am I right in concluding that cell #3 is gone?

The other lipo, the one on the right, was severely unbalanced. #1 was ~4.1, #2 was 3.7v and #3 was 4.22v. I started discharging it while on the balancer, but while the voltage went down, the imbalance remained. It looks puffed, but these are my first lipos and I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a safe 'puffness' limit. It wasn't in this sorry state when I got it and I've never used it before, I have no idea what happened.

I have a Flightpower Evo25 I bought new a few months ago but haven't even soldered a plug on, I wonder if that's gone too...

I just put a deans on the FP pack and the charger is doing fine with it, all cells were @ 3.83v and it's charging smoothly. So it has to be both Mystery packs that are the issue here...

Well, it sounds like you either have a bad battery pack or that the pack simply has a bad balancer tap. In my experience with cheaper lipos, the connectors sometimes caused problems. I've used those Zippy packs in the past and have had to replace the "deans" connectors that they installed.

I'll change the plug on the not puffed and check again... is the second one puffed beyond salvation though? I don't feel comfortable with charging/balancing it tbh

Wasn't the fake deans, I'll probably just take both to the LHS next week and have them get rid of them.

Mine looks like the one on the right...I balanced it for a couple of hours, they were at 3.82, 3, and 2...cell 1, 2 and 3 respectivly...SOON as I put it on the charger at .5A, cell 2 jumps to 4.2 and the others run right around 8.5,6...I'm not keepin it...way to odd...

I left it on the balancer for 3-4 hours last night and resumed today, it's still at 4.09 - 3.90 - 4.22

It's taking a while, but nothing's wrong with it so far. That +0.02v on cell #3 is bothering me a bit, but hey, everybody loves fireworks!

i would be worried with it puffed like that. however I am new here and dont know much about lipos, but if they are mystery packs they prolly didnt cost too much and I think I would cut my losses. Just my $.02

i ran some mystery packs for a lil while . . like 15 charges always balanced..and they went to $h1t . .i got some rhinos for hobbycity and they are still going strong and have about 35 + charges on em

one mystery pack almost burned my slash to the ground but i got it out quick enough to have a bonfire in the street

rhino has some packs now that are 40c that a few local guys have and i will be getting some soon

9 hours on the balancer later, the one on the right is at 4.19v - 4.18v - 4.22v. I'll run it on Tuesday in a tourer and charge it again (outside, ofcourse ) to see if the balancing gets any better.

My Mystery lipos do that some times. So do my eflight and Gforce packs. Clean the balance taps out and just let it sit in the charger to balance. I have 4 of the 2200 mah 25c 3s packs, I've had them for about a year now. I have had to let one balance for 12 hours one time. By the way I have puffed mine way worse than the one on the right. You can't beat the price.;)

The puffy pack is trash. If you try to pull many amps from it again you are likely to get fire when using or recharging it.

If the other pack falls out of balance after you balance and use it, it is no good for the application. Pulling too many amps or the pack is junk.

The motor is rated at 50amps, which is within the claimed pack limits... Junk then!

The non-puffed one is still freaking my charger out, I'll just take both to the LHS and ask them to get rid of them.

John, what is your criteria to label a pack as "puffed"? Certain dimensions? Inquiring minds would like to know...

dimensions larger than the new state. When they start puffing there is internal gas release that makes the pack more dangerous to charge.

Just because the motor is rated 50 amps doesn't mean it won't pull more than 50 amps.

Yeah, I understand that.

In the first pic he posted, I thought the two batteries were of a different type....but I guess I read that wrong.

both are Mystery 2200mah 25C 3S, different colour tap wiring and the puffed one was less than 1mm bigger than the other one when I got them, but not as big as it is now.
