Default Traxxas Speed controller and Radio

Looking to upgrade my son's SCX10 trail rig's electronics. The RTR electronics are to glitchy and dont even respond to reverse 1/2 the time. Stock servo is fine since its just a 1.9 and not much weight it has to push around. Considering Traxxas speed control and radio. Feedback please if this is a good idea and which models?

Looking at this esc: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXVSJ4&P=ML

The main reason I want to upgrade his truck is because It doesnt respond sometimes, mainly to reverse, but also because you can't go slow. Stock electronics are either on or off. Will just upgrading the esc solve this? Trying to keep from spending a ton of $$ on his rig since he is only 6, like mine which has sidewinder, bec, tq3 and more.

you can normally pick up that xl-5 speed control on ebay pretty cheap. My slash came with one and I never had one problem with it up till I went brushless. Not to mention its waterproof. On a scale rig I figure that would be a good plus too.

get a wp XL-5 esc and at least a TQ-2 radio, or even better a TQ-3 radio off of eBay. A wp Traxxas 125oz ht servo isnt a bad idea either.

I have an axial RTR also, I put the xl-5 out of slash in it, and use the slashes tq2 but it still does what you mention, glitchy and reverse tends to not work, (if it does is full throttle), so all it can be left is the RTR reciever, ill be getting a spektrum dx3e when they arrive and be done with it (untill i convince myself to get a sidewinder and lipo)

I have run the xl-5 waterproof in my lcc with modded tq3 on 3s, the esc has held up to 3s for 6 months, 5955 steering servo with no power loss, only problem with the xl-5 is no instant reverse, easy to get use to double pump rev. then its all good...
