Default Killed a TR2 in record time - no forward motion

I just got my TR2 on Friday and was driving it around in my TLT on and off all weekend (maybe 3 full battery packs). I setup per the instructions and it was working like a charm. Tonite, the forward direction went dead. It works fine in reverse, but won't move forward. I swapped receiver channels, battery, and transmitter and got nada.

I was running it in the following configuration when it died:

45T Integy Lathe Motor
2 Hitec 645MG Servos
TR2 ESC - Duh!
Hitec Supreme 8 Channel receiver, with Hitec Laser 6 Transmitter
Associated Black Label 3300 Battery.
All plugs/connections are stock.

Everything was wired up correctly with one trinity capacitor on the motor.

I cracked open the housing on the TR2 and did not see anything burn on the circuit board.

I was trying to climb a near vertical obstacle when it died. I smelled very faint electrical burning and killed the power right away.

Since its brand new, I figured I could send it back to Tower for a replacement.

Anyone else have this problem?

Trying near vertical?

Where the tires bound up or were they free to spin?

If you stall the motor your amp draw will shoot up.

This may have been too much current for the FETs.

The Rebel 2 is rated at 140A cont...wonder if you somehow exceeded that?

You didn't by any chance leave the throttle channel reversed on the transmitter, did you?

May sound odd, but having the throttle channel reversed can cause some problems.

The bad thing is that the ESC is being driven in reverse when you're going "forward" on the TX.

ESCs typically don't have as much current handling capabilities in reverse as they do forward.

If you check all this and don't have luck, call Tekin tomorrow (208 ) 634-5559. They've got great customer service.

No sense in dealing with Tower about the matter.

The tires were slightly bound, but the surface was loose enough for it to slide if need be, if that makes sense.

I'm pretty sure (99%) that the channels weren't reversed. I had set everything up proper friday night.

I am hoping that it is just overheated. I'll mess with it again tomorrow nite. My old school Rooster has a thermal protection which caused the ESC to shut down for a few hours when it overheated. I'm hoping this is a similar case.

Any recommendations for a beefier ESC? I normally run Novak Gear but decided to give the TR2 a whirl. I may just put my Rooster in the TLT and the TR2 in my race truck.

The Rebel 2 also has thermal shutoff but you shouldn't be pulling that much current through the thing with a 45T.

Pick one or the other.

Wired correctly means 3 caps. ;)

I've ran 1 cap on my green machine 2 and Novak Rooster for many years with no problems. I guess what works for one setup won't work for another. I'm running one from the positive to the neg.

If you can't get it working, you'll have to deal directly with Tekin about it. Tower doesn't cover broken Tekin products. One of the TR2's I purchased was a dud and had to send it to Tekin to be repaired. They returned it promptly.

I had a Tekin charger that quit working after a week, sent it back and they sent a new 1 at no charge.

cronus, a little off topic but I just setup my tr2 last night also. Do you always get a slight delay on reverse? It says that however long the setup button is held down is the delay on reverse. I was clicking it as fast as possible to get no delay but there always seems to be one. Does yours have a slight delay also?

I was able to get it down to about 1/2 second. You just have to push it down and release pretty quick.
