Default 2 cell or 3 cell?

I know there are lots of threads with questions about 2 or 3 cell lipos but none that answer my question.

I just finished building my scx10 with a tekin RS and 17.5 motor. I have been running it with both a 2s and 3s battery and obviously it is faster with the 3s but i dont need that extra wheel speed. My question is whether or not i will be losing torque by going with the 2s? In other words, are there obstacles i will be able to power my way up and over with a 3s that i wont be able to do with a 2s?

One other question, do you think with the 3s that i will thermal the esc or overheat the motor if i run for an hour straight?

the 3s will send more voltage to ur motor, resulting in more wheel speed and more torque. about the only time a 3s will out preform a 2s is when wheel speed is needed to get past an obstical, slice rock, mud etc, when there is little traction.

if you dont like the wheel speed of the 3s, in the words of JRH "Volt up, gear down" drop a tooth or 2 off your pinion, you will loose wheel speed but have tones of torque when you need it.

also if you have a programable TX, like the dx3r for example, u can adjust your throttle trim points.

I'm a big 3s fan (got one in my 4x4 slash with rs/6.5) but in reality 2s will do more than ya need with the 17.5/rs. Of course more is always better!

i had a 3s in my slash 4x4 as well with an RS Pro and would cause it to thermal within 5 min! Thats why im concerned with running 3s in my scx10, however it doesnt seem to be a problem yet. i ran it today for at least 30 min straight with the 3s and at most i saw 3 lights on the esc.

volt up, gear down. holmes has it right. Run the 3S. you will get longer runtimes and as long as you aren't severely undergeared you don't have to worry about thermaling either.

3S is minimum IMO, i am running 6S on my scx right now and its perfect

idea of mine is go with 3s but limit the throttle output with throttle travel

if you are concerned with torque then change the gearing.

Gotta have 3s!

You may not want or think you need the wheelspeed, but its sometimes nice to have it on tap. More than a few times I've tried to methodicly climb something and fail, then get frustrated, hammer the throttle, and watch the rig scoot right on up.

FYI: electric motors make the most torque at 0 rpm, and that torque drops off the faster you spin it. The more voltage you can feed it at a low rpm, the better.

Gear down, volt up. Learn it, live it, love it.
