| Cheapest esc/motor combo that has good drag brake?
Right now I'm running a sidewinder with a 35T integy. Works great. I want to build a second SCX10 on the cheap, but I don't want something twitchy or that can't stay put on inclines. I was thinking either this holmes esc, novak goat, or get another sidewinder combo and sell off the motor for $70. I don't think I'll beat $22 for the integy motor. Any other ideas? I might also get the RTR, which has a 27T motor, so hopefully whichever ESC can control that well at low speeds also. |

Sooo...you dont like the Sidewinder? I have quite a few Sidewinder ESCs and every one of them has more than enough drag brake. It sounds like you need to get rid of that crappy motor. New brushes and stiff springs make a WORLD of difference when it comes to motor drag. I know that $20 sounds like a good deal....but with motors, you get what you pay for.

For cheap there is the rc4wd outcry. http://rc4wdstore.com/2/product_info...3c2298622492e3 or the Sidewinder Micro http://www.ckrccrawlers.com/shop/ind...6a45ee1eb20ce3 |

The sidewinder works great, but it's not the cheapest. I have all Castle stuff in my cars so it's nice to be able to interchange everything. I may just put my sidewinder in his and swap one of my mambas in when I want to do some crawling. That rc4wd does look tempting though. My dad isn't going to be hooking anything up to the computer any time soon. |

So it says the sidewinder micro draws 30 amps. I remember my old ESC on my rc10t had a 30A fuse and I ran that with all sorts of brushed motors up to 17T without an issue. Is 30A still ok even with all the gearing these have? I might give that a shot, the size is nice! Uh, but would I need a seperate BEC with that? Castle doesn't list the bec current in their specs. I'm happy so far with the sidewinder 1/10 BEC. And I think I can still improve it with a shorter servo arm and bumping the BEC voltage up to 6V. I read that the sidewinder BEC isn't adjustable, if that's the case I'll put my mamba max on there. I assume the 1/18 BEC is much weaker though. |

Check this out from Castle's website... apparently the built-in BEC will work better on a 2s than a 3s: "Why is it the more batteries I use, the less servos the BEC can handle? The BEC converts the excess voltage from the power battery down to 5 volts by turning the excess voltage into heat. The higher the power battery voltage is, the more heat the BEC needs to dissipate. Making sure there is airflow over the BEC, which is on the LED side of the controller, helps with BEC heat dissipation and is important to BEC operation. The BEC is thermally protected and will shut down, then immediately come back on without being damaged, if the servo load is too much." |

I have the RC4WD Outcry paired with one of their silver can 35t motors in my SCX10....and as far as bang for the buck with solid performance it's hard to beat. The esc is 100% plug and play so it's super easy to hook up and get going...but you can't adjust anything and no lipo warning or shut off..i run Nimh stick batt so no diff to me. The drag brake is good and works flawless for everything I've done with the truck. I'm happy with the combo..and together they were just like $60.. |

Go with the Holmes ESC. Its so smooth, great modulation. It is $100, so not that cheap. But worth every cent. Plus its castle compatible.
