I had one on my GTB for my touring car. It works and unless you don't want to buy another ESC, it's an affordable alternative. The main thing I didn't care for about it is that it's kind of messy because of all the extra wires you need to solder.

It is messy but works great and works on all ESC except the XL-5's from Traxxas. For $20 to use lipo on a $40 ESC is a much better deal then spending $100 every time.

Why doesn't it work with the XL-5?

Not sure I have been in contact with them and they told me it has to do with is programming and what not. Hear is the Email.

Mr. Neill,

We are aware of this problem and there is no fix for it at this time. We have a post on our website that addresses this: http://www.teamnovak.com/tech_info/i...tes/index.html

This is quoted from our webpage:
The Novak Smart-Stop 2S Li-Po Cut-Off Module (Novak #5470) is not compatible with the blue-cased Traxxas XL-5 ESC (Traxxas #3018X) that is included with the Traxxas Slash 1/10 2WD Short Course Racing Truck (Traxxas #5805). This module may or may not be compatible with the original, gold-cased Traxxas XL-5 ESC (Traxxas #301. Novak is researching this issue to determine if an update can be made to the module or if a separate module can be offered for this application.
The only recommendation I can make is to not connect the signal harness and use the blue LED as a visual indicator as to when the battery is getting low, but this method will not physically protect the battery pack and will have to be monitored while using the vehicle.

Respectfully,
The Novak Technical Support

I bought a couple of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/7-4v-11-1v-lipo-...ts_Accessories
They just plug into the balancing port on the batt and blink and buzz when you are low. They are cheap and they work and you can use them on all of your vehicles. Chances are at some point you will upgrade esc's and not need them but i got 5 for like 10 bucks shipped so I wont feel so bad about not needing them anymore.
