| how bad does heat affect battery life
I am noticing that the run times on my crawler are getting less and less, I am not sure if that is cause its out in the sun in 90+ degrees or if my setup is messing it up. This started to happen when I put on a 14 tooth instead of a 10 tooth and put my over underdrive gears in. I have a 3s 1300 mah battery and it used to give me around hour or and hour and a half depending on how hard I drove it. Now I get like 20 or 30 min. any ideas?

Well, what brand of battery is it, and how many cycles have you gone through, and how well did you take care of the battery when it wasn't in use? All kinds of things can affect a battery and its lifespan. Or simply, a cell can go bad. |

it is a YR 20c 3s 1300 mah lipo with 15c discharge. I have run this battery for about 2 months now and I always recharge them before I let it set but I was told that with lipos there are not as many rules as nicads and they are alot easier to use, just as long as you never let them drop below a certain voltage. i use a venom charger that charges it at around 1.8 amps. Is there more to the lipo world that I dont know or am I just hard on batteries? |

There is more to it, in regards to storage, like they should be left to rest with only about a 40 to 60 percent charge, but that definitely may not have any influence on why your battery is crapping out on ya. Like I said, it just might have died, that happens even to the best cells. A 15C discharge rate isn't all that great, so you might have taxed it once and thus it said no more. Hard to say really, it's just a battery after all. |

Well, current lipo battery technology is at 35 to 45 continuos discharge rates and 5C charge rates...

Going from a 10T pinon to a 14T will make a difference in runtime too. You are using more juice to turn the bigger gear. I went from a 14T to a 17T in an Axial once and saw a noticable difference in run time. Check out Krawler Hobbies. They have a good lineup of affordable Quality lipos. |

Cold temps will definitely effect your run times though. | |

Heat will affect them for sure. I just recently learned that the hard way with a couple of my expensive maxamps lipos. They say storage temp no more than 140 degrees and I had been leaving mine in my shed all day every day and temps were getting up to 120 degrees in there. They'd been cycled quite a bit but i feel I should have gotten more out of them if I would have stored them inside. I always charge and discharge them like they should be but I think the constant high temps ruined the cells. Needless to say they all get stored in the house now. So yes I think heat makes a difference in cell life. Even short exposure times of high temps will probably damage them.
