Default Hitec HS-7980TH servo for Axial XR10

I'm putting an order together for a XR10 and I'm debating which servo to buy. Seems like the Hitec 7950 is the most popular choice on the build threads but the 7980TH has almost double the torque!

This is my first crawler so I don't know if stepping up to the 7980TH would be worthwhile - or whether it would even work well. Any thoughts?

Nigel to Marty: "These go to eleven." ;)

Around $50 for double the torque, TUFF call. If you got the money go for the 80. Hitec has a great repair/service department. So if anything would go wrong with it they will take care of it.
GO BIG OR GO HOME! There I said it.

It is bigger than the standard servo! You will probably have to fab up some mounts. Then be prepared to destroy steering linkage and knuckles. It is a beast of a servo. I was running it on my super !

Can't remember who, but someone on here posted up this link in a discussion about the Savox servos. They seem to have really good pricing.

The 7954SH looks to be a good choice also. Works with 7.4v and still has 333/403 oz of torque. The $30 price difference looks to be the steel vs. titanium gear set and the small bump in torque.

Ah - see, that's what I was wondering. I don't want to mess around with a servo that won't fit or might rip my steering apart.

I think I'll just go with the crowd on this one.

Check out the futaba s9157. Great torque and amazing reliability! I've never had one issue with mine for close to two years of abuse

I'm planning on a 7980 for my XR-10. Some slight modding will be needed, but it should fit, it's only around 2mm larger in each plane of measurement.

I'll chime in and say that I have heard of people eating the small Traxxas rod ends with the 7980, I have yet to kill one on my super, but then again its only been a couple weeks. I agree with gunnar, its not thatttt much bigger than a standard servo!

Here's a couple of pics showing the size difference. 7980 on top, Futaba S9157 on the bottom:
