Default XL-5 and glitching?

I am running an XL-5 in my SCX-10 scaler. Also set-up is a Castle BEC, Hitec 7954SH servo, and a 55t motor all running off of a 2's lipo. My controller is a Spektrum DX 3.0.

Sometimes when I am running it, and come up to something that needs a lot of torque, it will begin to glitch at about half throttle. I back off, and everthing is fine if I try another line. It ONLY happens when the system is under load.

Could this be an ESC problem? Or maybe it is a motor problem?

Well, if you have another of either one of those, we can narrow it down real quick. Doesn't have to be the same type either, just any other ESC, or any other motor.

I know the Xl-5 doesn't have lipo cut off, so I would be careful. Plus I don't know if that has anything to do with it...lipo wise. What's the bec voltage set to?

BEC voltage is 7.0, because of the HV servo. I don't happen to have an extra ESC here with me in my dorm, but I can test next weekend.

How is the BEC hooked up? To the receiver and you pulled the red wire on the XL-5? Or to the servo and you have left the red wire connected for the ESC to supply the receiver power?

Alright, here's an out loud thought process. You have the BEC set to 7 volts, and when the battery is losing power below 7 volts the BEC goes wide open. You're on the gas, drawing from the battery, you're on the servo cranking the steering and that battery is on its last breathe and you've got a wide open BEC trying to feed a power hungry servo. Either the battery is saying no more, or depending on the way you have the BEC hooked up, the ESC might be shutting down.

I guess either way you could lower the voltage of the BEC and see if it persists.

Or, disconnect the BEC and run the servo off the ESC's BEC and see if it happens.

@eeepee:
Yes, the BEC is in the receiver and the red wire is pulled off of the ESC.

Your thought process seems logical. I know the XL5 can't handle 3's, but what if I got a 7 cell 8.4V?

Yes they can. And there's a lot of posts on here proving they can, including many by me. So the 7 cell would be fine, and even Traxxas says a 7 cell is fine.

Does the issue happen with a fully charged 2S lipo?

No, it is really random, and doesn't happen like 2 days in a row.

I can probably buy up a cheap 3's and that would wake my 55t up some

Any recommendations on capacity? I currently get about an hr of casual crawling with my 1800mah 2's.
