Default Novak Ballistic 8.5, a dud for WK?

I just thru together a Wheely King and put a Novak Ballistic 8.5 3s and 3s lipo in it and after about 15-20 seconds it shuts down and flashes blue/amber, motor thermo shut down. The motor is not even warm, still cold/ambient temp. I had a 90t spur and 25t pinion. I then switched to a 96t spur and 22t pinion, same thing, blue/amber on the speed control. Is this speedo/motor combo not good for the WK? This is not the first problem I had with this combo. Same blue/amber flashed with my old Genetic 1/12th road car.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Is the 3s too much? I only own 3s so I don't know if a 2s will fix it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

the novak havok esc comes in 3 versions. the havok is rated for 2s, then there is a havok 1s and havok 3s, rated for 1s and 3s respecitvly. if your havok doesnt say 1s or 3s on it, then its only good for 2s and thats causing your issue.

aside from that, an 8.5 would be too much for a wheelie king imo

Mine said 3s. And yeah, way too much motor for it.
Thanks for the reply.

I think I found the problem! Like stated above, Havoc 2s handles 2s lipos and 3s - 3s lipos. I forgot my drift car has the only 2s I own. Put it in the WK and wouldn't you know, it ran fine. I guess my Havoc 3s isn't a 3s but a 2s after all (even though the speedo reads 3s, ). WTF?!? Maybe I can return it or get a partial refund from my LHS (cross fingers).

Thanks again for the reply.

I'm not sure but maybe 8.5 is lower than the turn limit for 3s? It may be something like 4.5 for 2s and 10.5 for 3s? I don't know this for a fact but it may be the case. If you can get a refund though maybe pick up a MMPro. Considering it handles 6s I think it should be right!

Try dropping a couple teeth on the pinion or adding a couple to the spur, or both. For such a low wind TC motor trying to spin those WK tires is why maybe it shuts down on 3S, some kind of protection kicking in.

Contact novak with the serial number from the bottom of the ESC and they can let you know what it's "supposed to be"
