Default Twin Tekin FX-R rear esc up in smoke

I just got done with a berg build and after about 20 minutes of run time the rear wheels started spinning out of control and smoke from the esc.
The motors are tekin 55t with 12t pinions. The rear motor was wired positive lead to the negative terminal and negative lead to positive terminat to reverse rotation, which shouldn't have been the problem (It hasn't been an issue in the past). I used Harley's 4pk set-up and every thing was working perfectly. The esc's were programed for 3s lipo cutoff, immediate reverse and max drag brake. At the time it smoked i was on a rock face with the rear esc lowered to -60 (over -100 for normal operation) and it was not binding or under a heavy load. Any help would be great, i really want to get this dialed in and can't keep frying esc's.
Cheers

1. Is that 2 caps on one esc?
2. Are the caps wired in the correct polarity?
3. What is the "goop" on the esc posts?

How did you have them wired to the receiver and External BEC? Seems like it should have been OK. A loose connection somewhere will short and cause the ESC or CAP to blow. If your lucky it will be the cap, if not the ESC. Maybe one of your motor connections wasnt adequate.

Ive seen solder joints that looked ok at a glance but really have very little contact. This causes arcing under load and will burn up an ESC.

Did you pull the red wire out of the esc lead going in to the rx?

The BEC powered the rx straight from the battery and both the red wires were pulled from the ESC's. All the solder joints are new and strong. I have talked to a few people and everything was wired corectly. I contacted Tekin and it sounds like it will be covered under their 120 day warranty. I will be dialing in my Bully this week with the same set-up and wanted to double check that it was correct. Thanks for the replies, i appreciate it!!!
