The major difference for crawling is that the DX3R has the 3 position 3rd where as the DX3S only has a 2 position 3rd.

lol, I like the "only 10 models" point! I was in the exact same situation as you and I went with the 3S and never looked back! If I can, I can give you a basic breakdown of how I came down to my decision: DX3R: -30 model memory -3-position 3rd channel, which for us crawlers mean you can set up a 3-position dig (4x4, freewheel rear, and locked rear) -higher price tag -dunno if it comes with more than one receiver DX3S: -10 model memory -2-position 3rd channel, meaning only 4x4 and locked rear for the most part -lower price tag -often comes with TWO receivers! For me, it was the realization that I don't realistically think I will own 10+ cars, and also that the 3-position, while neat, doesn't really serve my purposes. There are other differences between the radios, but it is mostly programmability differences that really didn't affect me as a crawler and basher. In the end, both of the radios served my purposes equally well, but since I could not validate the extra cost, I went with the DX3S. Oh, and I flippin' LOVE the radio!!! |

One other thing is the channel mixing. The S has mixing on the steering whereas the R mixes the throttle. The R has a faster frame rate but that doesn't really apply to crawling, it's more so you get the full bang using digital servos. The telemetry is nice but never used while racing, great for bashing though. There's a couple radios out there that are great for crawling and under $200, one by Futaba and the other by Airtronics. | |

Awesome thanks for all the great Detail and breakdown ! there was no info on the 3rd channel so Thanks again. - With the 2 position vs 3 position cant you just mod the switch and add some resistors ? - With Throttle Mix does this mean I have braking options ? Either use it for my new scaler with 2 speed or on my shortcourse. Crawler 1, 4 channels Crawler 2, 3 ch, but Dual proportional throttles Crawler 3, scaler, might need 2 or 3 channels Guess I should ask in short course forum, leaning towards the S ONLY because I already have my custom DX6i Pistol for my crawlers and I want something for my Shortcourse, but may want this for my new scaler. Great feedback, glad I didn't get flammed Last edited by toy4crawlin; 11-12-2010 at 04:06 PM. |

there is also the dx3e, a great radio, dirt cheap but all the same tech as the display ones. mine has all the end point adjustments on it, the 3rd channel is switchable between 2pos, 3pos, and linear.

| No, from my understanding it is a encoder style setup so the 2 positions are in the firmware it isnt a physical or electrical limitation. It just doesnt give you the option to select 3pos.

I use the throttle mixing on my 1/8th e-buggy with mechanical brakes. The motor braking is turned off but the ESC is plugged into the throttle slot, The brake srevo is in the AUX slot.

| The DX3E is an awsome controler for someone that is getting started or dosent want all the menu options and extra model memory. On the other hand The 3R is the $hit.
