Default ESC Original Super Rooster Question...

Hey everyone!
First time posting here! just picked up an scx10 and have just finished building it. I used to be into the rc think about 10 years back.
Im just getting into it again!

I was wondering what makes my old school super rooster original esc screem or whine so bad when im crawling it? what can be done, or what speed controller would be the cats meow for super low speed crawling, effeciency, and lack of sound and heat =) -o yea, and water PROOF.
Im not to familular with brushless as they werent available back in the day

For a brushed motor, the Holmes Hobbies Torquemaster BRXL Waterproof ESC is "the cat's 'meow'":
