Default Hakko FX-888

So I have had this 80w radioshack digital soldering station for nearly 10 years, it's been a trusted pal, who's saved me several times with all things RC, automotive, ETC. Well this last week My trusted pal had to be put to rest.. the heating element finally went out and repair parts are no-longer in production. I went shopping and doing as much research as I could on all the different stations out there that has the same or better features as my radioshack setup. After much reading and talking I decided on the FX-888. It is an 80w station with an analog temp setting from 400-900* a very impressive selection of tips, initial testing shows me that it heats up very fast, and with the stock tip it melt silversolder through 12ga wire with little to no effort

Just got my 888 in the mail just a few minutes ago. Glad to see it get a good review. I'm in about the same situation, my 12 year old Weller station went south last week

I have the Hakko 936 which works Great, i think the fx-888 is the station that replaced it so i'm sure it is even better.

It's a nice little unit. It only came with one tip and it's not very big. I want to pick up a pointed tip and one that is a little fatter too.

It's nice and sturdy. Metal housing and is heavier than I thought it would be. It came with some flame stickers that are a slight improvement over the blue.

The cord on the wand is real soft and flexible making it less of a distraction.

So far I really like it and hope it lasts a long time.

Yes fx-888 replaces the Hakko 936. So far my fx-888 has been really nice.

Agreed, no stickers with mine as I bought it at Fry's not LHS. The ceramic heating element is what makes it very fast to heat and recover....sign of a quality iron!

Hakko products are great, I was using a $10 radio shack iron for years before I got my 936 a few months ago and what a difference. I can't believe that I tortured myself for so long with that horrible iron.

I also recently got a FX-888 and I'm so very happy with it. I've used a hand full of times now and I've been so pleased with it's performance every time.

heats up quick and has a great recovery time. I've only soldered 14 gauge wires and some battery bars, and motor wires so far, but it's very precise like a scalpel

I like the stock tip for now but will probably get a few different ones

I've been using alot in the last week, I soldered all sorts of things, 12ga wires on a XR10, dig units, Deans plugs, RX wires, Audi Fuel guage. It's handled it all flawlessly. I did order a larger tip for bigger projects as when you have to splice 3 sets of 12ga together it takes a bit to heat that all up. as it sits though it takes 24 seconds to get up to 700*

Hakko rules. I've been using them for 10+ years. Never looked back after switching from Weller and Radio Shack.

I've been burning our 888 station for months now, generally gets one to two hours a day of on time. Great station, I may pick up another one or two!

I love mine. The have dis-continued the 888, and are replacing it with something else.

Wow the 888 had a relatively short run, at least as far as Hakko's usual product cycle goes. It's being replaced by something very similar, but with digital control. Meh.

yep. The 888D. Its cheaper to make a digital model. I prefer the analogue control because it is super fast to dial up or down the heat. I absolutely despise holding buttons to change settings.

Yeah, Amazon has a good deal on those. I'm considering too because my old trusted RadioShack one is difficult to get tips for. Even though they "are" in their catalog they can never order them.

Those tip cleaners are awesome. I found that the dollar store coated scouring pads make great replacements and you get 3 of them in a package.
