Default Testing a brushless motor..

Is there a way to test a brushless motor to see if it is good or not? I am asking because I bought a used 5700 HPI motor and time as I plugged it into my Sidewinder ESC and went forward the magic smoke blew out of it. Any ideas???

Blew out of what, the ESC or motor??
If the motor is bad (shorted) it will usually smoke on it's own, NOT the ESC as well.
