Default why did my servo die? 6v pack instead of BEC

im waiting on a BEC to get here, in the mean time i clipped the red and black wires on my servo and hooked em to a 6v RX pack(nitro). i left the yellow wire hooked to the rx and as soon as i plugged up my servo, it went hard left and ripped the gears up.

why did this happen? this is basically what a BEC does right?

Was the radio on?? If it was and it was set correctly, this should not have happened.
