simple axial light kit review
 

On my 1.9 KOH Jeep I installed an Axial simple light kit part # AX24257.

The lights are bright, the wires are long enough, it's been great. The only con is the 4 white LEDs are strung too close to each other for most rigs.

Here you can see how close I had to mount the rock lights. I actually mounted them to the headlight buckets. It worked out great because I added a micro Deans plug to the headlights to remove the hood and disconnect the lights easily.

Since it's a race rig I never made a place to have tail lights. Because of that I've had an empty slot on the panel to run more lights. So I ordered up some Axial LED's part # AX24252 with the plug installed to run a set of rear rock lights. I decided to use the small round light buckets I'm using up front in back as well. I get everything installed hook up a battery, turn them on and the rear lights are super dim. Not sure if it's because of the tail light circuit having less voltage or the LED's are not as bright.

I sent an email to Axial about this issue on tuesday and haven't heard back yet.

Anyone have used the 2 LED string if so what are your results?

Have you put them where the front plug up to see if they are still dim if they are they mite be bad or they are that way.

It's something to do with how the controller works, I know if you plug the lights in mixed up one set doesn't light at all.

Yeah you can't plug the led strings in backwards or you get nothing. They have it so you can only use 4 led front and 2 back. I guess they really did mean simple...lol. It works good enough for me on my Wraith so far. :)

The description of the kit says 4 white and 2 red. Did you try additional 2 white LED on the output that is supposedly for the red ones? If so, that will explain the low output. White LEDs typically have a forward voltage of 3.2V whereas red are happy with 1.9V (both at about 20mA current).
In the simple form the outputs basically switch the Rx voltage (typically 5.0V) and use a resistor in series to provide only up to the before mentioned max rating. Quick check,
if one wants (5 - 3.2) 1.8 Volts @ 20mA it will be 90 Ohms and for 3.1 it is a 155 Ohms, so in real life 100 Ohms and 200 Ohms.
If the white ones are at the outputs with the resistor for the red ones, and let's assume it won't start emitting light below 3.2 Volts the current would only be 9mA (instead of 20mA in the example).

Don't know about the internals of the switch, but two tests you might try
Plug the additional white LEDS into the outputs assigned for white LED and hopefully you find they work
Get some red LEDs and try them on the outputs for red LEDS.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but a quick question: I got a honcho body with a simple light setup, 2 white and 2 red LEDs. What's the controller for? If I plug it in my receiver in the dedicated light channel, they just light up, and I can't control them.

thank you. I have several on/off remote switches... but I plug in plain LED lights into them. Not sure why axial needs so much electronics...

You're welcome.
I haven't owned any Axial light kits, but I think some use a step-up type of voltage regulator in order to light up their LEDs. If yours don't light up when you connect them to a slot in your receiver, you might have one of those!

What is the max voltage you can run these on? Can they be powered by direct 3s?

I used to use these years ago before I learned how to do my own light systems. At the time the Axial AE5 ESC had 5V BEC output. When I switched to a different ESC that had 6V BEC output, I contacted Axial to see if this would be an issue. IIRC they said 6V max. Maybe things have changed but I'd say 6V max to be on the safe side.

As far as building your own lighting systems I have found this very useful -

I think generally we are all using 3mm and 5mm LEDs. Most electronic supply houses can provide you with them. I would say mine could be called "generic" as I buy them in bulk quantity.

I know there is some resistance to Chinese made items but understand that they probably produce 90%+ of all LEDs worldwide so it can be hard to find LEDs made elsewhere, no matter what the packaging says.
