| Hitec Servo??? 7980 or 7950???
hey I am still up in the air as to wich servo to buy, I like the 7980 for the torque but the size worries me. I know the mount has to be modified to fit but does anyone have pics of what to do? I don't want to hack up my vp link plate if possible. I see alot run the 7950 but is the extra oz/in worth the hassle of modifying the mount for the 7980? Thanx for any input |

the 7950 should be plenty. if you want more power but don't wanna modify stuff, check out the futaba bls157hv a little pricey, but 500+ oz of torque in a standard servo size.

It took me a half hour to get my 7980 mounted into my AX10 on a gearhead BTA plate. It is about 10% larger than a standard servo, so move your mounts as far out as possible, measure the distance you have, then check hitecrcd or servocity (I think they have the measurements) and see how much you're going to have to modify it. Be aware of drag link travel as well as this will put the servo horn further from or closer to the knuckle depending on your configuration. All you should really need to modify is to extend the one mounting hole out, but in all likelihood you will have to modify your link plate. Pics of your current setup would help, possibly from the underside with your current servo mounted. It was a bit of a pain to get it to fit just right, and I had to use a spacer under the servo mounting tabs to lift the holes in the mount to get the holes to line up properly in order to have 4 screws in, but the torque is absolutely sick and totally worth it in my eyes. I would never get anything less in a crawler. Sure it's overkill, but I'd rather be overkill than be underpowered in a tight bind. Good luck! |

i'm probably going to go with a 7950, i was looking at rigs with the 80 on it and they are bigger than I thought they were. The futaba is nice but I have been a hitec guy since I started in this hobby.

I just installed a 7980 on my crawler (XR10) and WOW! It was worth the effort to make a new mount. Wasn't all that difficult and didn't have to do nothing to my Vanquish front link mount. I did take the servo mount tab off it though. My servo mount is one piece, and made out of a 1/8th thick, 1" X 1" aluminum angle, I think 2 1/4" long. I will check when I get home tonight, and take a picture or two. If you have a vice to hold the angle, a hacksaw, a drill, and a file, you can make one |

Here is my 7980 bracket. Outside measurements are 1" x 1" x 2 5/16", 1/8" thick aluminum angle. Pretty simple, cut to length, cut it out to fit servo, cut to locate on axle, use stock servo mount to locate holes. Quite a few pics but you get a better idea maybe. I know it's a little work, but the extra torque is worth it. I am able now, to just shake this thing loose when it gets hung up. |

IMO, it's not just the power that makes the 7980 better, it's the size. Everybody complains that it's just a little bit bigger, they don't realize that means the gears are also bigger and stronger, that's a plus not a minus. I didn't do anything but spread the stock mount all the way out on my XR and bolt it on, also had to readjust gear mesh cause the servo hit the motor (so did the 8711 it replaced). The holes don't line up perfect but if you start all the screws it'll go right into place.

I like the mount because I have a 7980 on my xr as well. Did you move your servo forward? My motor hits mine, it fits but is a little close. Thanks. Also did you use a drill press Im assuming? What other tools?

| Re: Hitec Servo??? 7980 or 7950??? Thanks! I did use a drill press just because I have one, but it can all be done with a regular drill, a hacksaw, a file, a vise, a pair of pliers, and of course a drill bit, and countersink bit. You will just have to cut several cuts down between the tabs for the servo, (where the servo will sit), and then take your pliers and bend/break those pieces out, leaving the two side, servo mounting tabs. Then just file down where you broke the pieces off. That will be the most difficult part. Yes, I did set the whole bracket out just enough for the servo to clear the motor.
