Default Which motor and battery combo?

I am planning on using a old novak speed contoller that can handle 6-10 cell on my E maxx based crawler. I am going to try using only one motor, and one battery pack. I want to try and balance the weight some what.

About how many cells equal the weight of a typical motor

Also could someone explain wiring batteries in series or parallel, and how it afffects runtime, and power 8O

And based on a Crawlers needs what is best

first, make sure that speed control can handle your motor

i think 3 cells would equal the weight of a motor

series wiring is connecting the cells + to - to +.......

this increases the total voltage, ie: 6 cells at 1.2v per cell = 7.2 v

parallel is connectin all the + together, and all the - together

this yeilds an increase in the total battery capacity (mah).

if you have 2 3300 mah 7.2 v packs, and you connect them in series (you can't do this with tamiya connectors unless you make something custom).. you will will end up with a pack that has the same capacity, but twice the voltage, this will be good for an increase in speed, but you will still only have 3300 mah to use up

if you connect the same batteries in parallel (tamiya does have a connector to do this), you will end up with a pack that has 6600 mah at 7.2 v, your overall speed will be the same as with one pack, except you will be able to run twice as long

for crawling, i;d go with a combination of a mild mod single wind motor, and 2 7 cell packs in parallel, i think that would give the best of both worlds

the other crawler guys know more than i do about what works and what dosen't, but that's the basics of battery wiring

i run one magnetic mayhem in my maxx and it works just fine (9 tooth pinion and i think 72 tooth spur). i run one 6 cell pack and a tekin rebel esc (i was using a super rooster, but a rooster is too much for a single motor, plus i needed it for my clod) . I get much longer run times with one motor (compared to a clod based crawler with 2 motors)

just some tidbits of info for anyone else that's interested. Listed is the weights of various parts and there percentage of the total weight, 7.48lbs:

100% 7.48lbs Emaxx, non widemaxx, all electronics, tires,
wheels, 1 battery, magnetic mayhem

13.6% 1.02lbs Tranny w/magnetic mayhem w/both 1/2 shafts

9.4% 0.70lbs One six cell battery pack

12.3% 0.92lbs Stock chassis w/MC210 ESC, traxxas RX,
5645MG servo, Traxxas 2018 servo

5.9% 0.44lbs Tranny only, no motor, no motor plate, both
half shafts

1.1% 0.08lbs Motor Plate

5.9% 0.44lbs Magnetic Mayhem w/pinion and motor wires

How many servos are you going to run? If you run front and rear steering, it will drain the batts much quicker.

If you only plan on running one motor, you don't need to worry about series and parallel wiring.

A lot will depend on how heavy your rig is and how low geared you are, as far as running one motor. If you only run one, lighten the truck as much as you can and get yourself some 8 or 9 tooth pinions. This will help make the motor work less hard

I'd go with the Tekin Rebel 2 and a lathe motor.
