| Changing batts to 8cell noted reciever limit 8.4volts???
Dug out my old AX10- been sitting several months maybe a year. Any way I had been running 2 6cell nims in parralle (saddle pack wiith center hump pack). This is just a driver-fairly stock As old batteries were toast decided to buy new batts make 8 cell saddle packs, save some weight- dump the parrelle. Checked my Traxxas xl-5 ecs would accept 9.6v -yup -all is good. Got 1st pack built started second and for some reason checked radio specs on. JR XR3i .err..Can only accept 8.4v max....crap...uhmm My option is to back track build 7 cell packs-to get back to 8.4v or go back to 2 6 cells. I run dual steering-pulls single 7.2v down pretty fast. I was thinking the 8 cell would give me decent run time not sure on 7cell... My question is cause maybe Im mis reading. --- does it matter what the main battery is??? Would the reciever actually see the differance between the 7.2 or 9.6 battery going thru the ESC or does ESC actually pass full voltage to reciever? Stumped |

Your radio should be fine; the XL5 outputs 6V to the RX Traxxas - XL-5 ESC with LVD (#3018R) - Overview | traxxas.com |

As long as you aren't hooking the battery straight to the receiver it won't ever see the battery packs full voltage. It will only get whatever the escs internal bec puts out or if you have one the external bec puts out Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Thanks...I unplugged esc from reciever checked voltage @6v/ verified what I thought was the case-dont understand why the schematic for the radio makes it appear esc (may be the traxxas one?) and by text, would pass whatever voltage battery was connected to esc on to reciever? Its just not clear why the warnings of connecting more 8.4v - most esc dont pass that voltage? IM going for it... Probably wont take long to find if I erred again... senior moment-stopped and read instructions in the middle of project what was I thinking Edit:10:05 Thanks again for the responses-got it hooked up-actually batteries are showing 10.1v with 5 min charge-but wanted to see stall. Prev when steering at full lock (2 servos)-motor torque loaded (up against rock etc), car would usually grunt & stall-just couldnt deliver enough power. Now its flippin backwards-cant stall STOked! As mentioned, the internal ESC BEC will lower the voltage to the RX. The other "rating" is the nominal max voltage the ESC wants. A "nominal" voltage on a 8 cell NiCD/NiMH is 9.6 volts, fully charged it's higher. They use the nominal voltage since that's what they put on the outside of the pack. At some point, you really will want to go to 2S LiPO, but you will need a charger that does LiPO balancing charges and a LVC in the ESC. The LiPO is a lot smaller & lighter than the older chemistries. |
