| Brushless motor: 3 Wye VS 5 Delta
I have a large and very heavy rig (35lbs) that needs a bit more power as the setup it has right now is a bit strained, it has 40x74 1800kv Hobbywing on 4s right now, but I'm thinking of fitting a big lazy 56x82 Leopard as it should be able to cope more easily with the weight. But I have a question for the techs out there... As we all know Wye is way more torquey than Delta (1.7 times more from what I've read), so naturally I've been looking at these, but they all seem to be very low kv and more interestingly a low number of turns, not good for torque. It seems to be a trade off for turns in return for a Wye setup. I've found 2 motor setups in the above size, both are about 1000kv: A) 3Y B) 5D which will give more sustained torque, the first because of the Wye setup, or the second because of the higher number of turns? Hoping theres someone out there whos an expert in these matters Thanks. |

Copied from an old post For the same number of turns and wire thickness: DELTA gives 1.73 higher power and amp draw than STAR DELTA Kv (RPM) = 1.73 higher than STAR Kv while the Kt (torque) = 1.73 lower With a STAR connection, 1.732 more turns need to be wound to get the same power (and Kv) as with DELTA In your 3 wye vs 5 delta, that is about 1.73 apart, so the power should be nearly the same. The long and the short of the countless debate is neither is better really, just a different way of doing it. Some say the delta work better in high rpm low voltage applications while the wye is better where crazy torque is needed at higher voltages. On a brushless inrunner wye is easier to make thats for sure. A delta unit is not easy to wind. Later EddieO |

Thanks mate. Just what I needed! Think I'll go fit the Wye motor after reading that. |
