Ok so I installed the tekin RS geared my motor 87/16 on a Novak 35t terra claw on 3S and my motor still seems to get pretty hot. From everything I've read him geared around 5:47.

Try going down to a 13-14 tooth pinion.

More info about what rig this is would help. Have you made sure there in no binding in the drivetrain? Gear mesh set correctly? What do you mean when you say you are geared around 5:47?

He is a little off but 87/16=5.4375 pinion and spur ratio

Yup, .11:1 is certainly a little off from 5.44:1

Ok I'm trying a 14t pinion same 87 spur. In a PS wraith with beef tubes,alloy links&steering knuckles.

Weight and tire size has a lot to do with gearing also.

Always make sure your gear mesh is set properly. Too tight will cause heat. Also pretty much anything Novak is just a flaming explosion waiting to happen. I would save some pennies and pick up a proper Brood motor. Hell Integy would be a giant step up from Novak.

Yep.... Limited to 10t on forward..... 12t forward and reverse..... 8.5t 540 2 pole on brushless. On rs gen2

The Novak motor was bought as a trial&error so I can learn. I now see the difference 3s makes.I'm also rethinking my motor choice. This 35T Novak seems fast enough now ion the trails, but I'm having gearing/heating issues. So I need to figure that out before I invest in a brushless motor. I'm thinking the roc412 3100kv would just be total overkill and I'd lose the slow creeping up the rocks,so I'm thinking a brushed motor might be better as keep hearing about cogging?. I can see that I'm going to need the computer program so I can adjust the punch and fix the reverse wheel speed cause currently it's hardly got any power in reverse not even enough to bust the wheels loose, forward seems just fine. So many variables in this kind of rig. I see the need to be atleast splash proof when in the woods.

The 3100ROC is fine, you most likely won't need 3S with this motor. If you have binding issues in your driveline get that fixed.

In response to the Novak comment from Violator. I have and run a 45t Novak motor in my 2.2 scaler, I run this thing on 4S all the time. Yesterday I ran a comp with it in 90+ degree weather, on the 4S battery the motor temp was just 112 degrees when done. I agree Novak isn't the best but its certainly not crap either. At least mine isn't. I have a new 35t Novak that will also be run on 4S, this one may prove different idk. But so far that 45t has been bulletproof for me.

My advice, first thing, get yourself a reliable means of taking temps.
The finger method works, but I prefer a IR temp gun myself. Mine has saved my butt a couple times.

Second thing I would do, pull the pinion gear completely off and check the drivetrain. Spin the tires, see if there is something binding.
I'll bet there is something that is too tight and is causing 90% of the issue.

I am using a IR temp gun from harbor freight that I keep around the garage. I have checked the driveline for binding issues and everything spins very freely. I am wondering if I am not geared to low for the 3S pack at 16/87, I tried a 14 tooth pinion and it seemed like it got hot faster. Today I am going to try an 18t pinion, cause it sounded really wound up at WOT. just tooling around it does ok and stays cool but get into the rocks or ripping it up down a trail she's getting toasty. that's why I am thinking I am geared to tall? Thru all this I do have a 14,16,18,20 pinion gears & 80,84,87 spur gears. So please let me know if I am going the wrong way? Thanks.

Well I guess I am wondering how hot is to hot? after it gets to hot to touch the temp gun reads around the 110-130ish area. That has got to be way to hot cause the skid plate is hot, cause I keep reading about temps at or below 100. Wish I could tune it like a nitro and let her rip.

No binding

I've gone 140-150 on the IR gun before bad stuff started happening.
Novak motors will run hot. If you're only seeing 130, I'd say you aren't too bad.

Usually the rule is, you take the gearing down, reduce pinion tooth count or increase spur gear tooth count, and the motor temps will come down.
Now that being said, you can also run a brushless motor at WOT for too long and it will do nothing more than build heat.

A couple more questions about your set up.
Tekin RS Speed controller. What mode are you running, sensored, un-sensored or smart sense?
Sensored all the time will also build heat, especially in a motor running at WOT a lot. I run the dual-mode or smart sense. It turns the sensor on at low speeds and shuts it down at high..
Timing/advance. What mechanical timing are you running on the motor. There should be a little scale on the motor. Where is it at?
Advance, what are you running for advance in the speed controllers. Too much advance will do nothing more than make heat. For example, with the 4-pole motors such as a pro4 Tekin, they don't like a lot of advance. Just makes heat..
If you are running advance the motor will make a ton of power up high and scream. BUT it will make more heat.

Another thing to think about. There isn't a lot of room for a motor in there, and there isn't much room for cooling. A small fan on that motor may help a TON..
OR, a small cut, with some stretegic screen, painted to look cool, will help the air get out and cool the motor.

Well I'm running a brushed motor. I do not have the tekin hot wire pc interface so I believe I'm still in default/stock mode. I made all adjustments in Quick tune. I don't know how to change mode without the hotwire.

Ok so I tried a 18 tooth pinion and ran around and my temps stayed around 100-108 after a wot run down the street and back and thru the grass over a small pile of rocks. Thanks everybody.
