Default battery question

through out my 15 years of RCing, i've never built a battery pack. i finally decided to build my own, since my latest vehicle has weird needs. i actually had already bought a stick pack, but it didn't fit, just barely. i bought the DEANS battery bars and solder, i cut the battery all apart, but i can not get any sort of solder i have to stick to the batteries themselves. what's the deal? specific type of solder needed? my gun is decent, never had any issues with it before...

Did you rough up the battery where you want to solder?

I don't claim to be an expert, but I have built 4 or 5 packs. The battery contacts seem to have some sort of varnish or shellac over them. You need to use some sandpaper or a dremel sanding drum and go over the contacts to remove this stuff. Solder doesn't adhere to it very well. I think I've also read posts about people using flux to help the solder stick.

These guys are 100% correct. You need to lightly scuff up the end of the pack where you are going to solder. You need a lot of heat for the shortest time possible, as you don't want the heat to penetrate any deeper into the cell than is absolutely necessary. Just use a good rosin core solder designed for electronics and tin the end of the cell before trying to put the batter bar on.
