Default BR-XL vs Axial AE-5 noise. Holmes quiet mode comparison inside

I recently built a RC4WD Gelande II Cruiser and put an Axial AE-5 ESC in it. It had a loud whine from the motor that took away a lot of the enjoyment of driving the truck. After building something with this amount of scale detail I wanted a quieter experience. After doing some reading I bought the waterproof version of the Holmes Hobbies Torquemaster BR-XL.

I couldn't find any videos showing the Holmes Hobbies BR-XL quiet mode and how quiet it really is. I just hooked up the new ESC tonight and I made some comparison videos just doing a bench test on the rig. I'm really surprised at just how quiet the BR-XL is. There is no motor whine at all with this ESC set to quiet mode.

Here are the videos: The motor is an Axial 55T

One thing to note is that you need to have the Castlink to be able to access the quiet mode option to turn it on. I don't have a video of non-quiet mode for the BR-XL as this feature is really the main reason I bought it. This ESC has a ton of adjustability, I don't even know where to begin with the other settings.

I can also already tell that low speed throttle control is improved over the Axial ESC, I can't wait to get this truck put back together and get it outside.

Don't know if you still have this problem but I had the same problem with my scx10 and swapped motors with a rc4wd and still had a loud whine. I found that the stock transmission plastic spur gear cover amplifies the gear noise x100. I took it off and all the noise was gone!

like muh BR/XL

the silent mode is, well... ...silent

less the servo noise of course

the hold feature is purdy cool too...
'cept it makes some noise when it's engaging the motor.
Well at least with muh cheapo Axial 55T mtr.

Maybe other motors aren't as loud when the hold engages ?

Regardless... it holds well once the hold feature engages the motor.
There seems to be a slight delay before the hold feature engages the mtr !?
A second or two, lost, finds ya rolling back down a inch or two prior to engagement.
And I didn't see any C link adjustment for that ?
But I think it need be instant on (hold) to work well !?

^ meh I usually leave this feature off anyways...
so when operating in the silent mode there's less funk noise

IMO
the HH BR/XL is probably the best brush motor ESC going

here's mine running in silent mode ( the TJ )
